Thunderbird "Subject" box problem

My fiancee just had a problem on her system. The "Subject" box in thunderbird is compressed. I'm not sure the version on her system but it's up-to-date or very close. Here's a pic of what it should look like and what it does look like:

Anyone know what could cause that and what will fix it? Dragging the "body of text" box down does not change the size of the Subject box.

Your TBird theme is fubared perhaps? Try a different theme for it.

I tried a different theme, all themes give the same screwed result. Moreover I found it was not just that one box but several of the boxes in the options menu where you configure thunderbird were like that too, so if we ever needed to make a change in the setup of Thunderbird we'd be screwed. I solved it by uninstalling Thunderbird and replacing it with an older version. Good idea with the theme though.
