literally... if I have a torrent that has not even many connections (50+ or so) the ethernet just goes to hell. packets are dropped, pages are slow, irc and aim lag, it just dies basicly. It has never, ever done this before... so I am puzzled. I used to have a good 1000+ concurrent torrent connections with no problems. its not my internet, its just this machine. I could limit torrent connections, but like I said, its only started since yesterday. :bang head
Are you using a DSL/router? If so it may have powered down inadvertently, and reverted to factory defaults. I know of a couple of routers that have low max connections by default, *even though they can handle many more*. For example, on my Globespan Viking that came with British Telecom DSL it was set to 192, but it can handle 512.
When you exceed that specified limit it will cause the problems you described. So you need to check what the current max connections setting on the router is, and increase it. Secondly you may want to take a look at the specified timeout values, as keeping old connections alive for too long may cause the IP table to fill up quickly. Again, default values may be too conservative and not work well with your p2p app.

router? HA! smoothwall here baby. like I said, previously I've had thousands of connections through it without a problem.
its seems to have fixed itself though... must have been my cable.
