Now that Ubisoft has officially dropped Starforce, are they re-releasing Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory w/o the Starforce trojan?

I absolutely LOVE the Splinter Cell series, and was greatly chagrined when I found that Chaos Theory used Starforce, and therefore I wouldn't buy it. I'd love to finally get a trojan-free copy of the game.

Does anybody know if they've released it w/o the Starforce protection?

i have chaos theory and i love the SP GAME. the graphics rock. but when i found out that it had starforce, i removed it and then reinstalled windows. im not risking my expensive drives (i know its only a small chance of breaking things, but it does happen) just to play a game.

maybe we could start an online petition for the re-release without starforce???

Not really, it only takes one hacker and then the protection is just somthing to encourage people not to buy it and download a copy.

There are ways around starforce.

But most are an awful hassle, and the best, and legal one is for Ubi Soft to drop it.

You're suggesting piracy on a moderator's thread? Is there some kind of Darwin Award for forum posting?

Well I just bought this game yesterday, and I too am curious about the use of starforce. There are ways to remove starforce, but I'm told that it will come back whenever you try to run a game. So part of me wants to return this game to Virgin and get... a book. And another part of me wants to do battle against the forces of evil...

Fortunately I also purchased F.E.A.R. for 15 bucks (seems to still be going for 29.99 in the states. All games older than 3 months in france get dropped to 15 bucks.) so I have something to play while I'm deciding what I want to do.

But anybody care to take the plunge with me and see both if starforce is still in a new copy AND if we can do some co-op?

To Oni: I checked but couldn't find anything on ubisoft's site or elsewhere about a legal/legitimate fix.

Lol this games going to be pirated like crazy now.
I have no doubt that it already is, as the function of a pirated copy is to circumvent or disable copy protection. A SF-free copy has likely already been cracked for some time now. I'm basing this on the SF games that were recently patched by their own developers like X3, where all they did is release a cracked .exe devoid of SF.

That's the major problem I have with Starforce protection... it doesn't block anyone seeking a program illegally, but it does have a tendency to prevent legitimate users from using their hardware as intended.

i haven't had any problems with starforce games...
You'd be one of the lucky ones then. Earned in Blood kicked my dvd-rw back to PIO mode and I had to reflash the firmware with a goofy non-regioned version to fix it. Not that I'm complaining much though, as a region-free dvd player isn't half-bad to have around.

Oh man oh man...

We have a rebel in our midst. Playin by noone's rules.

Ok. This is the first time I have heard of this. I do have some knowledge of starforce being an "anti-pirating" protection, but I have never heard the word trojan thrown in with it. Can someone explain to me what exactly it is that starforce does? I have SC:CT and it is an awesome game. It takes my new rig for a spin. But, if it houses trojans, F that... big time.

Any question on earth about what something is can usually be answered at Wikipedia. Such as "What's a .CZ file?"

Sorry for the double post, but according to this guy:

http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=4829845&postcount=10

The european 1.00 to 1.05 patch removes Starforce protection. And it also gives you two new maps! They also have a US version of the patch, not sure if it does the same thing.

I just looked back over my install to make sure. It looks like I used a workaround with the 1.00 to 1.05 euro patch to not deal with it, so I'll have to take the statement back BECAUSE I don't know if the game still uses starforce without the said workaround. I thought it ditched it with the update, but it seems there are still mixed reports as to if it does or not. For me and my buddy, it ran fine without starforce. Sorry guys

Wow. I'm glad I didn't open this thing. I sure meant to.

If the patch got rid of starforce then I would be all for it. But I don't really want to jump through too many hoops for a fifteen dollar game. I'll return it to Virgin and get a book or some store credit. They have Rise of Nations with its expansion, or I could get Pandora tomorrow. Or the aforementioned book... The Virgin on the Champs Elysees doesn't close until midnight. So I have a lot of options.

Thanks for giving me the heads-up before I opened the game.

Just returned Chaos Theory and picked up (ironically enough) Star...Craft.

Starcraft and the Broodwar expansion for 10 bucks.

So I managed to get five bucks in cash back from Virgin and one of the greatest games of all time. And I have the benefit of not having to deal with starforce at all. So now all I have to do is delete all those patches and starforce removers. If they release, one day, a patch for Chaos Theory that completely and utterly ANNIHILATES starforce, or if they just re-release it with a big sign saying "This version does NOT have starforce" then I'll pick it up. But being more of a Solid snake guy anyway, the hell with Sam Fischer.
