Hmmm i seem to have a lot of cooling questions tonight but i guess thats kinda the purpouse of these forums isnt it. yea so anyways Im going to oc a t-bird 950 to well as far as i can get it and to do so i need to push taht little FSB up a few notches. the mobo that i have has a standard of 100 but can and will be changed. My question is if i push the FSB up even 10-15 Mghz will i need active cooling? And if so what, im open to the use of peltiers, but dont have the time or money to deal with water cooling. Any help would be greatly apprecieated

Heh, 10 000 to 15 000 MHz. If so you'll need some super cooling. If you meant 10 to 15 MHz, you might need it. If your motherboard is rated for 133MHz FSB CPUs, then you won't have to worry about it. If it's not, you might need to. Odds are your peripherals will hold you back more than the northbridge. Peltier cooling would be a bit of overkill for how much you'll be overclocking. I'd say save yourself the trouble and just add some thermal grease to the passive cooler that may or may not be on there

Older FSB limited boards like the KT7 series benifit from Northbridge cooling. A small Socket A HSF is my favorite for this. A passive HS on the clock gen may gain and extra MHz or two.

the board is an old FIC rated for 100 Mhz without a g :) hehe ne how its an older board and thre is a greeny on the northbridge as of now and every mhz i can get outa this thing would all the better. I have an old hsf for a socket a athlon... its a little big but if i pasted it on the northbridge with AS2 epoxy would that be good enough? thanx again mates

While Arctic Silver Epoxy would work, may I suggest drilling holes in the HS to match the ones in the motherboard? A couple of self tapping screws and some plastic washers to protect the motherboard will complete the installation. If you don't want to look for plastic washers, make some from a Lexan soda pop bottle.

does it make sense to cool northbridges off fairly rescent mobos with the kt133a chipset?

I have an AMD 761 northbridge. I took the little fan and heatsink off, and put on half of a TBird heatsink, that came with my retail cpu box. works great, should be plenty-o-cooling.

I did this mostly to make it quieter. But now I am pretty sure it would remain cool enough regardless of whatever FSB I throw at it.

Just wanted to add this....

If you decide to use peltiers to push it farther you will need to use watercooling to handle the heat being put off by the peltier and cpu.

Right, Pelts for Athlon CPUs require Watercooling, but lower end P3 and Celerons can be air cooled due to not putting out as much wattage. If you were going peltier cool your Northbridge, you'd prolly not need any more than a 20-30Watt peltier, if that, which can be air cooled with a typical P3/Socket 7 Fan.

I was refering to his Athlon ;)

I usually recommend active cooling on the northbridge for major overclocking attempts. While installing a better cooler is excellent, an easy and cheap way to add a little extra cooling is to slap a 40mm fan onto the existing greenie sink. If you go to the hardware store, you can find the right size and right length screws to run down into the sink fins like the old 486 CPU coolers used to do.

since you proabbly have the original kt133 you will not get more then 10mhz better so dont bother

I had the original kt133 and couldn't get it past 111 stable 9max 112 on board!) it had a 133 option but it would never ever post!
Don't bother, more hastle that its worth.

my kt7 (based on the kt133), did abour 120 ish stable on stock northbridge cooling, it can be done.

i was thinking of useing my k6-2 HSF as northdridge cooling for my A7A266 as im stuck @ 1122 for stablity , think it would help ?
