View Full Version : Signs of a damaged CPU?

I believe I may have overheated my CPU.... I mainly use my PC for audio recording and have it in a soundproof box that is ventilated. It seems one of the fans went out without me knowing about it. Now when I run projects with a high CPU load, the computer runs choppy. Is this the sure sign of a damaged CPU? What other signs may there be? Any other way to trouble shoot? What is the possibility of other critical components being damaged by heat?

Thanks,

Mark

unless you have disabled things in your bios you dont usually need to worry about overheating because the system will throtle it back or reboot completely if temps get too high...

usually :)

That would depend on the age of the motherboard and if it even had a working tempature sensor. Anyway try running a few programs like
Prime95(run this for 24 hours)
SuperPI

Really any program that will stress your PC. Firstly though make sure you have replaced the broken fan, and monitor your temps. It's possible the CPU is just throttling down due to heat(A protection feature in most new CPUs). To test the temp use a program like Everest, or Motherboard Monitor. Anyway more then likly your parts are probably fine. It's possible that you might just be a little jumpy after the fan broke, things like that can often make people look for errors with their computer and freak out about them. Of course I am not trying to say you don't know how your PC acts, just commenting you may want to consider or try to think if it was like this before or not. Oh BTW its 4am here so sorry if my grammer is horrible or what I just said is pretty far out there. Tend to not think to clearly when I am this tired.

Edit: Also what type of PC do you have, and which fan was it? This could help tell if it was even a vital fan to begin with.

A little more info would be helpful, list your computer specs. But i agree with tenchi86 that your probably throttling (If your system is new enough to have this feature). I would just run prime95 and throttle watch together and you'll find out in 10 seconds if its a heat issue. If you don't already have these programs here's the links to get them.
