Hello guys. I'm new here, so I'll say HELLO! :D
I currently have a Celeron 2.9GHz CPU, I know it's not the best CPU, and I'm trying to play games on it, and it's truly appauling.
I wish I could afford another CPU!
So, I have no experience in Overclocking, so could some people please give me some tips on how to overclock my celeron?
What programme do I need?
What do I need to know about my computer?
Thankyou very much.
- Denic.

I think you'd need to know how the FSB speed, RAM speed, CPU speed, etc, depend on each other.
I'm no Intel guru, but that's very important to know. It is explained very well in the stickies.
BTW, WELCOME TO THE FORUMS
:welcome:

We need to know a little more about your system, especially what motherboard you have. Not all motherboards allow overclocking, especially ones that are found in OEM computers.

Thank you! :D
Ok, while the Asus P5S800-VM might not be the best motherboard available, there are lots worse. It has a SIS chipset, but I think it should at least have some minimal overclocking features. Check your instruction manual about how to enter the BIOS (setup menu). Usually you have to press the "delete" key as you boot up. default FSB will be 133 MHz (see your CPU-Z screenshot). Maybe try raising the frequency to 137 FSB to give you a little over 3 gig. Now test for stability and check temps. If that works try a few MHz more if you want. Don't go too high unless you improve cooling. Good luck.
Hallo denic2k6.
Can you tell us which kind of memory you are using in the system?
You are also say that the system is quite bad at handling games. So the obvious question must be, which video card are you using? Overclocking the video card can also help, especially if it is a "slow" card. If you are using a high end video card, then overclocking will do nothing to the performance when playing games.

Overclock your video card by using this...
CoolBits (http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/GeForce-Overclocking--CoolBits-Reg-Download-2014.html#download_locations)
Just run that and then you will have an overclocking menu in the nVidia options.
(Right-click) nVidia-Displays-> "your display" -> overclocking tab
Use detect optimal settings if you are unsure how much to overclock
cheers

My Gfx card is overclocked, doesnt make much diffrence. And the pipes are unlocked.
As for my BIOS, ive gone into it and I cant see anything about overclocking.

When I did detect optimal settings on my 7900GT it said I should go to 632/890 on mine, and it wasn't volt modded :/, of course when it set it there the system crashed and I had to reboot...

Go there and download your motherboards manual, it should have some helpful info for you. From quickly looking over it though it seems it allows Custom Ram timings, CPU set overclocks, AGP/PCI frequency. To set it to a predefined CPU overclock go to advanced/jumper-free configuration, from there set AI-Tuner to 5%. After that has passed a test like Prime95 for around 24 hours move it up one. Keep in mind you may also need to set your AGP/PCI frequencies depending on if your motherboard will change those based on CPU speed, the correct speed for those being 66.6/33.3 (someone correct me if I am wrong). As for the ram I am not sure if you want to get into that or not, if so check out the ram section. They have some great threads at the top about what all the settings mean and what you should do with them.
Edit: Almost forgot, Welcome to the forums.
He has a 6800...overclocked and w/ the pipes unlocked...Mmmm what kind of games are u trying to play...http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c52/Douken/Red%20fox/fox-huh.gif
I do believe he is bottlenecked by the CPU if he has a 6800. Overclocking the video card will probably do nothing to increase performance for him. I would try your best to squeeze a little more out of that CPU. Either that or scrounge up $100 or so to get a Pentium chip.

I've made my decision now, I'm going to buy a Intel P4 3.0GHz. 2MB Cache !!
Woot! It should be good for playing games!!!!

May want to wait a little longer. The Conroes' release should drop prices a pretty large amount once it starts hitting real vender shelves.

Remember to check if the motherboard fully supports the new cpu.
Check if it supports the new fsb settings and such.
If it doesn't, then get a new one.
Happy hunting.
Ps. Your video card can handle most new games. It would have no problems running games like Doom3 or BF2 if a high detail environment.
