Was about to buy a new IBM drive this morning and I just could not push the submit button to buy. For the money, access time, speed, quality, and reliability what is the best IDE 7200 rpm drive?

Or should I be looking at a DMA drive?

I've always loved Maxtor drives. Some of the fastest on the market and I've never had one fail. Can't really beat their price either as they're usually one of the cheaper brands. Just need to make sure you don't get stuck with a Quantum drive (Maxtor bought them).

Western Digital has also been very good to me. Not as fast as the rest of the pack but run quiet and cool. Also really cheap...most all the ones I've bought have come with rebates (as has Maxtors).

I just ordered my first IBM drive (for myself anyways). Always stayed away from them because of the price. $75 for a 20GB 60GXP and I had to get one to try. I know they're fast but hear some problems out of them at high bus speeds. Guess I'll find out.

I hate Maxtors. At work they fail all the time, I have records. They are total junk.

This is a frequent question here. After many long debates on the subject we have come to the conclusion that no brand is as reliable as we would like. You will find that people have had problems with all brands of drives.

My favorites are Fujitsu and Seagate. I have been told Fujitsu is not making IDE drives now.
For IDE drives you want one that is 7200 rpm and ATA100, these should not be hard to find in any brand.

i recomend seagate's 40 gig 7200 rpm hdd, its completely silent! i have heard bad things about maxtor. my friend fondly calls them "errortors". they fail, random data corruptions, .etc*

I'm not going to recommend a drive, but I will point you to storagereview.com as a good place to look.
