No idea what it is. I can reproduce the sounds when i either access a file from a certain part of the disk or during a format job when it gets to a certain percentage complete of the drive. I'm going to RMA the drives but wanted to know if any of you guys had come in contact with a sound of this sort. If the drives were 64gig Deskstars i might take one apart to see whats actually causing the sound but i'd really just like a working drive...
Cheers

Our proxy blocks MP3s so I will not be able to hear it until I go home.
I have heard many sounds from hard drives, most are either the bearings gone bad or the heads hitting the platters.
Do not open the drive if you want to RMA it, they will deny you if it is opened.

I'm no expert but i think you've got it with your second idea Ridenow.

Thanks for the input guys. I was going to RMA them anyway just wondered if any of you had ever heard the noises before.
KILLorBE - Thats the funny part, theyre IBM drives. So its not some shoddy second rate company that pumps out a few bad apples per 100 produced. Kind of bizzare that i got two of the shoddy ones though which is why it looks bad on me but enh i didnt do it so fug em.

OMG the flashbacks!!! i've heard that exact sound on my old ibm hd. Seems like when it read certain sectors of the drive it would make that nasty stratching noise. Eventually it turned out that the drive had 3.5mb of bad sectors... :burn:
