[0]morpheus83 writes "Ricoh claims they have developed an optical component that reads and [1]writes all disk formats -- Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD, as well as DVD and CD -- with one pickup and one objective lens.
The component is a 3.5-mm diameter, 1-mm thick round diffraction plate with minute concentric groves on both sides which function as a diffraction grating. Based on disc information the drive can identify which format disk is loaded, Ricoh's optical diffraction component adjusts the laser beam with its diffraction grating for each format and passes it to the objective lens."

don't forget, its also a All-in-one Reader too.

so hopefully, there will be All-in-one Players eventually on the market. so we don't have to buy a HD-DVD player, and a Blu-ray player.

it would be like if a VHS player could play VHS tapes, AND beta-max.

only problem is, i'd HATE to see the cost of the burner's, if the current price for a blu-ray player is nearly $1000.

All-in-one is the way to go. heck even makign a drive with 4 lenses woudl be a possiblity if you could make it fit physcally and price wise.

Price is always high at first, remember how much the first DVD burners were when they came out? Now you can buy them at $30 a pop.

yes, and the all-in-one solution will hopefully bring the price down across the board since every burner/reader can be built with nearly the same "blueprints" if you will. This will save time and money by eliminating the need to develop seperate components for each media type.

oh. my. god. this is horrible news! we dont want 9999 different standards when they do basically (from my understanding) the same @#$(*ing thing... so hell we'll just make a drive that does it all! Does anybody realize how little sense this makes?! I'm not saying its not useful and nice to have, but simply stating that the ******** supporting their different standards are just making things annoyingly complicated for the rest of us.

I'm kinda with twoeyes on this one. Think DVD+R and DVD-R. Sure the drives we have now can read and write to either, but I'd much prefer a single standard that everybody gets behind, a-la the Compact Disc.

EDIT: And while I'm at it... Yes, I would have liked it if CD-RW took over the CD-R market (though its burn speeds were too slow for that to ever happen :()

Yes, in a perfect world a single standard would be ideal - but it isnt going to happen unless some authoritive boards is formed that over looks things like this.

i think when new standards come ALL of the details should be made public, and it is voted on by the people.
