View Full Version : w2k 60hz bug
there is a bug in w2k for the monitor refresh rate right? does the sp2 fix this?
also, im using the rivatuner fix for this but it will force the system to use the max vertical frequency the monitor supports for each resolution: is it right this the fix for the problem or there is something better to look for?
thanks.

I've not noticed that it is stuck at 60, and that with 2 different machines with different vid cards (x1 gf2mx and x1 voodoo 3)
You can change it to the max in the advanced display properties.

ive not noticed it too but readed too many complaints about this 60Hz bug and am now suspecting something is going wrong. the first time i installed w2k pro i noticed there was a problem with the monitor refresh rate setting once it wasnt able to record the frequencies i selected. for example: if i set 75Hz for 1024 (max my mon supps) and change the res to 1280 it will reduce the refresh rate to 60Hz (max my mon supps); then if i set it back to 1024 it will keep the 60Hz, not the 75Hz ive set up before - i know what to do in order the os to achieve the desirable refresh rate (at least with w98se).
ppl who mostly talk about this bug r gamers who uses many diff resolutions and my problem is also one game which runs diff resolutions everytime.

Never heard that b4, you learn something new here everyday
I've heard of the refresh rate being stuck at 60hz with the 3DFX cards. But there were numerous ways to fix it. I'm running Win 2K PRO w\SP2 and am running my refresh rate at 85hz. So either it's only with 3DFX cards, or they fixed that bug.
Win 2K PRO is an awesome OS!
IF you have an nVidia card.. There's a nVidia refresh rate fixer for it..

i thought it would be a general thing, not only for some few video cards. im actually using an MX - that fix must be the same of the rivatuner one once it is for the nvidia cards.
bdf24, if you go up to a resolution your monitor supports not the 85Hz and then go back to the original one will it restore the 85Hz automatically? or it will stuck at the refresh rate of the previous resolution?
thanks.

Actually I run my res. at 1024 x 768. If I change it to 1600 x 1200 the refresh rate goes to like 70hz. Then if I go back before the 15 sec are up it restores back to 85hz. But if I click to keep at new res. then go back to the 1024 X 768 then it goes back to 60hz which is default. But all I have to do is change back to 85hz and all is well again.

right: that is the problem.
W98 will save the user refresh rates for each resolution and apply them when one of the resolutions r used. W2k saves one as default and will try it with all the resolutions, once it cant keep it with one (high enough) it will keep the higher the monitor supports for this new resolution and try using it as default for every other one.
Yes, But it's not that big of a deal. All you need to do is switch it back to what ever refresh rate you want and it's fine. It will stay there.

IMPORTANT NOTE about FRESH RATE:
it doesn't matter if you change the fresh rate in display property,
windows will always choose 60 as its default fresh rate.
ever wonder why some of your screensaver doesn't run full mode at 75 or above ?
here is the TRICK how to FORCE windows to run YOUR OWN CHOICE FRESH RATE..............follow the below STEP
type DXDIAG at the run....it will open directX diagnostic.............go to MORE HELP.............CHOOSE OVERIDE...........when you are in there...........enter YOUR OWN CHOICE FRESH RATE.
YOur bug is SOLVED...............:)

Never had that problem come up. But if it does in the future I'll know why now. Thanks.

Thanks for the DXDIAG tip that is cool.
i would try that using directx but it would give the option only for the current resolution, wouldnt it? if i want to enter all the frequencies for each resolution what should i do? do i need to apply each resolution, run directx dialog and enter the refresh rate i want for it?
bdf24 if you always run any application in your default resolution you wont get problems ever. as i said my games run in different resolutions everytime and once windows cant store the custom refresh rates for each one the 60Hz will always be chosen: once the game runs one resolution my mon not supports the 75Hz.

Hmmmmmm...
Damn the nVidia refresh rate fixer worked like a charm for me.. And now it sets maximum support that my monitor can go to for every resolution..
If you have an nVidia card get it at

to answer your question about the resolution
when you change the FRESH RATE in directX, it applies to all the resolution. However, this FRESH RATE is for your Windows only, not MONITOR
let say................Fresh rate in directX is 75 and your resolution of monitor 1029x768 at 75 ..................
if you want to change the resolution from 1029x768 to 1600x1200, the only thing you have to change is 1029x1200 at 75
Make sure that your MONITOR support the frequency. If it supports 60, don't change anything above 60........otherwise, you WON'T SEE ANYTHING IF YOU CHANGE ABOVE 60
when you change FRESH RATE in directX , it will be the STANDARD for your windows..........and it will not automatically change even though you change the resolution......You should.........try that............and let us know.............

The Win2K & XP refresh rate 'bug' is not a bug. MS decided that 60Hz should be fine and that applications should decide their own refresh-rates. Unfortunately few if any do this.
