Hi, I can get 2 XFX 7800GT XXX's (used) for $300. Would two of them be more powerful than one 7900GT? Would the performance be nearly equal? Also, I dont have an SLI motherboard, so I would have to buy one of those as well.

Which do you think would give better performance?

A volt modded 7900GT is about the same as SLI'd 7800GT's if im not mistaken, but the SLI can do higher AA and AF IIRC.

Not to mention the problems with many 7900GT's and the memory issues. Plus, SLI is the way to go.

My volt modded 7900 GT gets about 200 points higher in 3dmark06 than I got with my regular XFX 7800 GTs in SLI I had before and it doesn't take a huge power supply and generate nearly as much heat. I got my card before the revision and I have never had an issue. If the new ones work the way they're supposed to, I would definitely go for the 7900 GT.

You've gotta keep in mind that SLI is mainly used for the higher resolutions. I can run 1600x1200 in most all of the new games out, and if not I just bump it down to 1280x1024. 2xAA and 8xAF and I'm set to go. Because of the higher res, there's no need to pump up the AA and AF to far, if at all, to get a clean image.

A single card will kick ass in raw performance when it comes down to AA and AF + quality settings. However when pairing a the 7900GT to two 7800GTs in SLI, the SLI setup will take cake for resolutions.

yep hes right on the dot

so i would go SLI because Nvidia cards can't do HDR+AA simultaneously(spelled right?) so if you can run really high res so you dont need AA and still have HDR

plus, i did my own HDR vs AA in oblivion(still have to run benches of each i only took screenshots so far), and HDR was much more noticable than AA. with AA+bloom the game looked rather washed out and i run at 1280x1024 so the AA makes minimal difference that is noticable but HDR+no AA looks much better.

so yes, go SLI - if you can pay the same money, even 30 or so more, go for it.

son't forget some nv silencers

If you like high res's, 1600x1200 and up, then SLI is definitely for you. I use an LCD TV for my gaming and the native res is 1280x720 and SLI didn't help really at all at this res, so I sold the SLI setup.

SLI for sure, as I stated above, if you like high resolutions...

I just finished playing Prey at 1600x1200 highest settings and through-out all of the gameplay, maybe 1-2% was noticible lag. I'm surpised how well it performed for a game being based on the Doom 3 engine.
