Hello~
Our office is having a little prblem with out network and though i'd try here.
We are running 2 different servers ( Email/DNS and File/FTP). We have 8 static IPs so i'd though it would be a good idea to use a switch to split up those ips. two of the ips are assigned to the two servers mentioned, and one of them is assinged to a router which has 4 workstations behind it. all of the computers mentioned above is part of the same domain, not workgroups. Problem is we can all see the Email server no problem only the email server is able to connect to the Filer server. Diagram

Any ideas why i cant see the server?
Thanks.

Can you even ping the server you want to see from a workstation? If not it must be something with the router. How are things configured internally? Dhcp on the workstations?

also, am I having trouble reading that diagram or are you running your entire network using public IP addresses? that is a VERY dangerous security hole. you need to put a firewall between your modem and your network. You then assign one public IP to that for e-mail and forward the ports to the mail server so you stay nice and secure.

oh and :welcome: to the forums, even tho I see you registered a while ago :)

sorry, my diagram sucks

i can ping both servers from any of the workstations.

i know its a big securty hole to have public ips on servers. I have software firewalls running and the ISP is also offering a firewall from thier end.

I assigned public IPs to the two servers and the router. the workstations are on DHCP by the router. (its a standard linksys home router) we have around 11 workstations and wanted to have a static ips for all the servers so that we dont have to mess with routers. (in case they lock up or something)

Thanks for the welcome. i registered few years back but i focused on watercooling sections. i'm a tech support but now i am working as a IT guy since im the youngest and that apparently means i'm expert at "all computer stuff". Thanks for any help.
