I don't think anyone has any idea how bad I want that drive..I wish i could afford one! ARG. Nice deal tho!
this is the new .10 drive as well. perpendicular technology and is probably the fastest 7200rmp drive of this size

heh, wow, the sale is only for 5 dollars, so this drive is priced pretty well normally as well

Okay... I've been seeing something about having to slipstream something in order to gain full capacity on this drive. I'm making a new system with this drive. Do I have to do anything special to make it run or to gain full capacity from it?

Are u talking about the 137 gb limit in windows? Im pretty sure sp2 fixed that
yeah you just need SP2 and it will recognize the drive as being the full 300 or so gigs

Great find! I just jumped on this one. I've been considering purchasing a Samsung 250GB SATA, but I respect Seagate as well, and this is the same price I had in mind for much more space.

Newegg (http://www.newegg.com)has Seagate 320GB Serial ATA II hard drive (OEM) for $95 - $5 coupon "buybarracuda" = $90 with free shipping. This is the new kind of drive, which uses perpendicular recording technology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpendicular_recording).
I just bought 2 of them! Can we say RAID 1

Got mine a few days ago and it's definitely the fastest hard drive i've ever owned. My HD tach scores seem to resemble everyone elses with a 66-67 mb/s avreage read. Seriously tempted to pick up another for raid 0. Check out the storage forum to see the great raid 0 scores people are getting: http://www.ocforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=69

I got the 2 of the 250gb versions of this for 85 each. I'll just say they're sweeeeet! I'm sure the 320gb ones are the same. You'll love these drives.
picked one of these up for my mom - from what i heard, these things are fast as HELL for 7200rpm drives :attn:

Actualy if you have the MOBO to take advantage of it, the 320gb is the fastest 7200 out there.

Ummm to get the SATA II speeds, do I have to remove the jumper pin? It mentioned something about that on the sticker, but I already have it screwed into the drive mounting bay, if so , how do I remove the jumper pin? I tried my finger nail with no luck.....
Thanks!

Do you mean to take advantage of the SATA II? My mobo only supports SATA I, but from 53/mbs to 144 was a very nice step up for me. I noticed with them setup in a Raid0 that fragmenting is also minor.

Yeah, that and the NCQ and PerpP.

07-27-06, 01:40 PM
So I need a mobo that supports perp recording then, It's not just something the drive does on it's own? I didn't know that oh well, they're still super fast.
Nathan0490

Yeah, that and the NCQ and PerpP.
Are you sure about the mobo having to support it? I think it just needs to support SATA II...

Actualy, I checked, and Perp is only supported on the latest revision of SataII, besides that, it should still haul ass. :D

I don't believe so.

Honestly, I don't think you need anything more than just a sata port to be able to use it. I don't have proof, nor did I read to check, but it only makes sense that it's backwards compatible.

Eeeeek Ima scared to use a knife on my 2 new harddrives... I will try a tweezer first, then a knife if needed, my finger nail had no effect, didnt move the pin at all. They sure put them on there tight...

07-27-06, 08:04 PM
Ok, so I guess I'll try moving the jumpers and benchmark them and hopefully it'll work.
:UPDATE:
I am trying the drives without the jumpers right now and still get 138 - 144 in Sandra. I think your mobo has to have SATA II support in order to run the drives at those speeds. I dont' think it's going to hurt to keep the jumpers off though, I will just be running SATA I speeds.

Wow, seriously?? It's not just a feature that the hardware of the drive takes care of on its own?

NCQ is part of the standard SATA II feature set, Perp Recording was added later, and thus would either need a bios update for your motherboard, or a later version of the chipset that supports SATA II.
Imagine it like this, the 7200.10 Seagate is like dropping a hot new engine into your car. Well, it doesnt matter how badass that engine is if your transmission and axles cant handle that power. Essentialy that same idea.

Does the DFI Ultra-D support Perp. at all? with any rev. bios?
MadMan007
07-28-06, 07:10 AM
I understand how NCQ is part of SATAII because it requires the interface controller to do something. But I thought Perp recording was much lower level and has to do with the way the data is stored on the surface of the disk and is taken care of by the physical disk hardware and firmware controller. Otherwise how could a perp drive work on a controller that isn't SATAII?

Perp doesnt work for me, since I am only on a DFI NF3 UT 250gb.

What?! What you mean it doesn't work... the drive isn't recognized or it runs slow?
You should try messing with the jumpers on the drive... dunno if that'll help or not.

No it runs very fast, but from what I read, and scores from HDtach, it doesnt use perp. That or my controller is fubared.
EDIT** Decided for the hell of it to rerun HDtach, and got a MUCH faster score then before. 64mb/s fast :D Not sure what happened when I was testing last night, but all I know is that for the most part I can keep up with a 74gb Raptor :D

Sooooooooo.... Does perp work without SATA II support?
Right now I am hunting for a better source then PC World, where I read it in. But from my tests, the HD is damn fast.
My first test on the 7200.10 - 50mb/s
My second test on 7200.10 - 64.5mb/s
Western Digital Raptor 74gb - 65.5mb/s
Yeah, this drive is fast. No clue what was wrong with my first test, and now every test I do, is much faster then the first, all in the 64mb/s range.

Well my last post was kind of a leading one ;) because my 7200.10 works fine on the SATAI controller on my motherboard too. I did a little Wiki research and perpendicular technology is just a low-level hardware difference that doesn't rely on the interface. Perpendicular drives use a different method for the physical layering of the magnetic media on the disk.
I also got ~65MB/s average read, 135MB/s burst. It's definitely a sweet drive with great capacity and pretty damn good speed :)

I get 138-144 mb/s with 2 in a raid 0 on a SATA I controller. Seems sickly fast to me!

I get 253.3 MB/s according to HD Tach 32mb Test.
