View Full Version : Help! Spray paint hates me!
I'm not one to go all out prettifying my case- I usually just mod it for function, not looks. Since my purely functional case is, frankly, ugly as hell, I decided to bust out the spray paint and go wild on it to make it more LANparty-freindly.
I read all the How-to articles I could find, and then I went to it. 2 layers primer, wetsand, 1 layer paint, wetsand, 2nd layer paint, wetsand, 3rd layer paint- wetsand and then big problems!!
I planned on stopping and sealing it after the 3rd coat but something went awry- when i wet sanded coat #3, spots of paint come off in big chunks, stuck to the sandpaper, and proceeded to gouge long track marks into the bottom 2 layers. WTH!!!!
So, now my case looks like utter crap, many lines and gouges in the paint. Almost can't feel them with a fingernail, that's how shallow they are, but when the light hits the case right they stand out like a sore thumb.
What went wrong here? now i have to sand it back down to metal and re-prime it and start over again if i want it perfect. I let it dry 48 hours before sanding and the next coat, I washed it with 99% isopropyl alchohol before painting, I sanded with 1500 grit wet, and i used Krylon brand "low odor" latex enamel. Dried in a basement, temperature and humidity controlled and in acceptable limits according to the can. ARRGGHH!!
Where have I gone wrong? Please, ANY comments or suggestions are MUCH appreciated- I am starting case #2 this weekend, and I want to get this one right by God!:D
Why would you want to sand inbetween coats?
I would do 5 coats, one every 2 minutes, (so they stick)
and then after that sand with 1500+ sandpaper to
finish it off.

How long did you wait between sanding? It sounds like it was not cured when you sanded.
I do not think you need to go all the way down to bare metal. You should be able to sand the bad spots flat and coat over them.
Edit: just noticed you said 48 hours.
Apparently if you're going for a flat, reflective finish you have to do it. Spray paint won't lie perfectly flat on it's own, so you have to help it. The reflectivity is built out of the many flat layers reflecting with the sealer instead of it just being shiny. More like a car.
It's a total pain in the ass- I use to be really into models, and to paint some metal parts correctly that is what you had to do. But it's way different with spray paint, and also my target is bigger than 3/4 inch\;)
yeah 48hours or more between touching it man- can says only 8 hours till dry. I figure I was good. Maybe the alchohol? What abou the type of paint, ever heard of it?

Latex Enamel?
yeah, so? is that bad or what? it was all i had in the basement at the time. The first 2 coats of it worked fine, that I know.
If it's bad paint, please tell me what to use instead- or why the latex enamel is bad to use.
Entirely possible it's the wrong kind of paint. Also possible it turned bad from sitting in my basement for a year.....:)

Good for painting the house but not good for painting the case. Probably not too good if it has been around forever either. Go and get a good can of rustoleum or something else. It's only about 5 bucks a can and will make all that work pay off a little better. If you put 50 hours in sanding that thing, heck spend 5 bucks on it for some good paint. Check my other thread on the hammered finish paint. This works VERY well and is much easier to use. One nice coat worked for me!:burn:

yeah, ain't that the truth! well, i been using 2 cans of it- one old one I found and a new one I just bought. Pieces I painted with either can are messed up. It does say it is fit for painting metal on the can, but I guess there are better options. Hmm, I could always just stop after the 2nd coat...naaah, I want it all shiny and nice.
I did use this stuff on an older case from way back and it worked fine, but I didn't sand it or anything- just primed, sanded primer, sprayed, and sealed it with a satin finish- looks pretty neat but by no means is it reflective.
well thanks for the advice!

I had the same problem when I was painting my case, but I solved it a different way.
I used matte finish paint instead, and it looks great.

To get a decent shine you have to paint then sand each coat to make sure it's all flat.
well, I went and bought some Krylon High-Gloss, and the difference between that and the blue Latex is like night and day. The texture is different, it lays better, basically it appears I was using the wrong paint! Good call mw521!:)
BTW, the I chose the latex stuff because it was the most expensive of the lot ($4.99/can) and therefore must be the best. This shows how wrong I was.....:D
