Yes, they are in two different price ranges, the Ti200 competes with a 8500LE(OEM), but a Retail 8500 would crush the Ti200 (again keep in mind that you can get a Ti200 for like 160$, and a retail ATI for like 250), but i would pick the 8500LE because of things like image quality, and the smoothvision i saw at the andantech review (it was beautiful)......It is shown that the 8500 with its current drivers are slightly better than the origianl Geforce3 and a little slower than a Ti500 (should be fixed with drivers)......it is no contest....except in overclocking, where companies like Gainward make the Ti200 pretty decent, but still not up to par......

Retail 8500 will do 300/600 alot faster bottom line 8500 is way more of a card , so if it is the same price then get the 8500
Aks Default he has an 8500

yeah, that looks fine, just make sure that the ratil, is ATI's own reatil box.......otherwise it maybe the LE (which should still be faster than the Ti200, but not as fast as the Regular Gefroce3)....

It says RETAIL amongst the info so is it ok?
Zuck Gou :)
11-17-01, 03:00 PM
If ATi is selling it,and you don't see mention of any other company/brand then it'll be a REAL Retail.
All other brands of the 8500 are OEM, even if the company decides to put it in a fancy, schmancy box and call it Retail.

Does it look like one? (A real retail?)

Oh yeah!
What sort of cooling should I get wif it? I mean it has no ramsinks! and half the ram is on the back so how do i attach it?

No aftermarket fan is needed, nor are any ramsinks i have found, just make sure you have an extra large fan blowing over the actual card itself.
Its just showing no cooling because its displaying the card bare.
Make sure that the fan has cool air blowing into it.

Use with caution. I think Default wrecked his card with Epoxy connecting traces.

I bought one without a box. How can I tell if it is the LE or not?

download a Program called Powerstrip, or go to www.rage3d.com and dowload their rahge 3d tweaker or download Radeon Tweaker, and then go into overclocking options and it will tell you if the clock speeds are 250/500 or 275/550 if the clock speeds are 250/500 then you have an LE.....

If i cut a hole in an anti-static bag just big enough so the ram is in view but the pcb is covered then that would be safer?
Is some of the ram on the back? If so why...

not really, what you have to watch out for are the leads coming out of the ram, the safest thing for you to do is get the radio shack stuff (its not electrically conductive, wait, do you have the shack in UK?), and put an extremely thin layer on the ram chip (dont put a huge glop) and put little drops of super glue in eachcorner.......if you want to use Artic Silver be extremely careful when you do it as it is slightly conductive.......

This is what i meant covering the traces...

This dont need to be downloaded

yes seems like a good idea, but make sure your holes are small enough that you cover the leads, also the paste probably wont cover the whole chip this way, but what you do cover should be enough, those radeons dont get too hot....

Tahnks, what brands of superglue (or uhu glue0 aren't conductive? And whats a good equivalent to as2 but non-conductive that i can get in the uk? Oh and if i spill some as2 is there a way to get it off before i turn it on a riun it?

of ypou guys have a radio sjack go and get some oftheir white silicon goop, or go to your locacl computer store and ask for heatsink paste and if they have generic silicon goop thats the best....also you could get thermal tape which doesnt transfer heat as well but is much safer (besides the ram on the 8500 doesnt get that hot because of the way ATI has designed its chip).....to get off AS2 iuse some nail polish remover with Acetone....the best alternative to AS2 i saw online is Nanotherm blue, and it conducts almost as well as AS2, however i think its a waste of money because you dont need that good of a Transfer...

i got some white paste from maplins its real sticky and i dont know if it conducts... oh and what tape shall i use and does it transfer heat well? If it falls off will my oc'ed card break?
funnyperson1
11-18-01, 11:37 AM
that white paste probably doesnt conduct electricity, and i would use that stuff because its safer and it getsthe job done, and i dunno about brands of thermal tape, but normally it wont fall off, and no your card wont break (maybe a card under it might if it falls off) but if you follow the directions it probably wont, and thermal tape is not too good at transferring heat, but its more than enough for a Radeon......

The paste dont stick though! And the only glue I have is UHU glue...is it conductive? (And it isn't to strong...)

Just a comment on your sig m8, didn't BG make that statement back in '81 ('640K should be enough for everyone')...??
Sorry just being pedantic :)

superglue should work fine (whats UHU) and can be found at any hardware store for about 3 dollars....just put little dabs in te corner....

I think he is talking about an UHU Glue stick. No that wouldn't be strong enough.

ThermalTake memory cooling kits (about $8.00) come with a pair of very nice anodized blue ram heatsinks with a self-adhesive backing.....
