I was wondering if the multiplier on the old P200-MMX is locked or not. I'd heard somewhere they werne't but I'm not sure on that. Anyone know for sure? I've had the "luck" of running into a computer with an Asus board and a P200... I have it running at 75Mhz Bus (which is 225Mhz all together). I'd like to lower that back to 66 if I can.

I didn't think Intel locked their chips until the PIII.
I know none of the Pentiums are mutliplier locked tho'.

They started locking chips in PIIs. 233mhz was the first I believe.
some p133 were "up locked" i.e. no increases allowed. i have one someplace

Yea, I think this 200 may be too. I tried tinkering around with it, and I'll raise the multiplier and it'll post at 166 instead of 200 (or 233 as it's supposed to with the 3.5 multiplier). It's not completely locked, but I don't know why I'd want to UNDERclock it... it's slow enough already. I'm building it for my mom, she wants one in the basement so she can "play solitare while doing laundry, and maybe 'surf the net'". Don't need anything more than a 200 for "surfing the net". Jeez, I haven't heard anyone actually say that in awhile....
I've only read that computers after P2 233 were locked.

I have the same problem with both my chips (1x166MMX and 1x200MMX). The thing is that in some of the 166~200 chips, the internal settings take a 1.5 multiplier as NULL instead of 3.5 ( for 66x3.5=233) and revert to default speed. There's not much you can do except drop the multiplier down a few and up the bus speed. Or, take a look around cos you can get 233's for cheap in 2nd hand stores.

I had P-166MMX once I had it running @ 188MHz (FSB 75). Never tried to up multi, but I once O/Ced a guy's 200MMX just by setting FSB at 83MHz (!!!) left the multi alone got a nice 50MHz increase, I know a guy who got up to 266MHz with 200Mhz chip.
In conclusion, I think the chip IS unlocked, but you could just check it and see?
Chip should be unlocked..
There's a possibility it could be locked if it was a late P2.
