View Full Version : newbie intrested in overclocking
i've got a 1.4ghz and looking to overclock to possibly at least 1.55ghz. i am currently stuck with the retail heatsink and fan but with arctic silver 2. i run at about 44c idle and 49c full load. what do u suggest would be the best HSF thats under $40 that will accomplish what im looking for?i have the asus a7m266 board. has anyone had any experience with this board or can u direct me to some place where i can read reviews about people who have overclocked with this board. thanks
Glaciator 2.
It beat my SK6.

the CAK-38 and Swiftech are good heatsinks too....

The CAK38 comes with a nasty delta fan that makes a hell of a noise, I would recomend a Glaciator or watercooling!! LOL

Welcome to the O/C Forums nookie!:)
Do you have a 1.4GHz Athlon TB or new XP?
I have both. A Unlocked Muliplier 1.4GHz TB O/C to 1704MHz Max 12 X 142FSB and Windows boots up stable and fully functions.
I bought it already unlocked from FRY's Electronics. This last Tuesday I went to FRY's and bought 2 NEW COOLER MASTER CPU COOLER Designed 4 OVER CLOCKING made all out of PURE COPPER with a not too noisey 7500rpm Fan. It supports Athlon TBs or XPs up to 2.0GHz all for $40 bucks each. Without this HSF I would not of been able to reach 1704MHz on a TB 266.
I have a XP 1800+ O/C to 1725MHz Max 11.5 X 150FSB useing the same COOLER MASTER HSF!:D

1705MHz (11 X 155 fsb) is the maximum speed I can get out of my Athlon TB 1.4GHz@266 fully stable in DOS only, not Windows.
1691MHz (11.5 X 147 fsb) is the maximum speed i can get out of it with Windows98 SE running fully stable. Here is my proof!
thanks a bunch for the tips guys. im bouts to go ahead and take your word for it and order the glaciator 2. its a good price and i hear that it works great. any idea on the noise level tho?
Its not loud, its a 30cfm 5500rpm fan.
No high pitch noise like the 7000 rpm fans.
