You can make a bootable CD w/drivers, I'm assuming your board lets you boot with the optical drive ;)

If you need drivers.. they would likely come with the drive, on a floppy ROFL :( maybe you can burn a bootdisk with the drivers on another computer???

The only reason you would need drivers is if you are doing RAID with the drive.

If you are installing with the SATA controller in AHCI mode and your install CD does not have SP2, you can slipstream both RAID/SATA drivers and SP2 into an installation CD. Details here:

There's an easy way to find out if you need to load SATA drivers for the XP install: Boot from the Windows XP CD and wait for it to detect your hardware and show the hard drives it found. If Windows properly detects your new HDD, then you're all set! No drivers needed.

It's confusing, because the WinXP CD comes with some generic SATA drivers that work with the SATA controllers on *some* motherboards, but not all. I use a slipstreamed WinXP CD as suggested by others, but the problem is that you'll have to do some reading to create your own. There are several ways to do it, and sorting through all of the information can be very confusing. The easiest way is probably to use the nLite method, which guides you through the process using a graphical interface. Using this method, be sure to add your mobo's SATA and RAID drivers when prompted. Also, I recommend burning the .iso to CD at a slow speed to prevent write errors. I've had installation problems with slipstreamed WinXP CDs that I've burned at 48X.

yea i know how to splitstream already just need to know where to get the drivers fromThe SATA drivers aren't specific to a particular hard drive, they are for the controller(s) on your motherboard. You will find these drivers on the CD that came with your motherboard, or on DFI's website. If your mobo has multiple SATA controllers, e.g. nVidia and Promise, make sure you get the right ones.

Then while installing Windows, there was an error copying some of the files from the CD to the hard drive. I then burned the same .iso to another CD at 8X speed and everything worked fine. Your results obviously may vary--you might be fine at 48X. Ever since my experience, however, I burn slipstreamed .iso files at the minimum speed.

/offtopic sorta/
Do you have to reactivate XP after you reinstall with a slipstreamed copy?
<--- Win2kpro and linux distros ;)

Any time you install Windows XP, you need to activate it.

Be sure to give the computer bad input. Always faster to talk to a real person, even if they're on the other side of the world.
