PlayStation 3 Production begins
XBitlabs today is reporting that Asustek Computer, one of the world’s largest producers of computer components, has reportedly begun to ship Sony PlayStation 3 game consoles to Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. The fact that the consoles are being manufactured means that the hardware specs had been finalized and the launch will take place in mid-November.
The Chinese-language Apple Daily and Commercial Times newspaper reported late on Tuesday that Asustek Computer started shipments of PlayStation 3 (PS3) game consoles in small volume in the beginning of July, according to DigiTimes web-site. According to a report, about 200 thousand component sets were shipped to Asus in June, which means that the company is in position to build 200 thousand game consoles. It is also said that in July the Taiwanese builder will receive higher amount of component sets for the PS3, while in September and October the company will get “more than one million [component] sets.
Sony promised to have 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles available during the launch window and ship 4 million PS3s worldwide by the end of 2006. By March 2007 the company plans to supply 6 million game consoles to the market.
Foxconn Electronics is also projected to build the new generation game consoles for Sony. However, the news-paper did not unveil any shipment schedules for the company, claiming that the company will start assembly operations “when demand rises”. Given that the PS3 is not on sale just now, the demand may only rise until after the launch.
The two versions of the PlayStation 3 game consoles – for $499 and $599 – will be launched on 11th of November in Japan and on the 17th of November in Australia, Europe, U.S. and other regions.
Now that I have a HD monitor, I want to get one of these. I wonder if the Wii will be HD also? Big up Foxconn, I'm a huge fan of their products.

Wii will not support high-definition.

Yeah, Wii was not developed with HD in mind.
Also, this is probably good news unless something goes wrong in the middle. I'm betting this first 200k is for Asustek to familiarize with the manufacturing. Then, in September and October, they can really get cranking. I wonder if they can get their output to be 5x greater within 2 months of practice...
Is anyone else making them besides Asus and Foxconn? Asus gets 1.2+ million to make for launch. Who's handling the other 800k?
Wii will not support high-definition.
I'm only speculating here, but I'd expect atleast some Wii games to be HD. Seeing as the PS2, which never officaly supported HD afaik has atleast a few HD games. GT4 comes to mind (1080i).

Nintendo said that they will not support HD, only 480i which is a standard broadcast signal for analog TV's/4:3 and it's not HD.

I'll take 480p and it working 2 years later over 1080p and a dead/dirty disc error filled DVD drive in < 2 years.
PS3 is a big wait and see as far as I'm concerned. There are alot of question marks surrounding it right now. I think it will be successful because alot of people will buy it simply because it's the next playstation (people are tools). It might be worth the money, but no way would I shell out $600 if I'm not sure it will pwn.

Want proof??? Go on the forums and say that to the masses of people (including myself) whose PS1s AND PS2s bummed out on them with these problems and then see if you find masses of N64 and GameCube owners with issues with their systems..... Yeah, I'll buy the damned PS3 eventually, but I'm not buying a 1st gen/revision one and getting screwed for the 3rd time. BTW the PS1 and PS2 are the ONLY consoles I've ever had bum out on me. My 360,Xbox1, Dreamcast, Saturn, Genesis w/CD and 32x, Nomad, Master System, Jaguar, GameCube, N64, GBA, DS-lite, SNES,NES and TG16 w/CD have never given me a problem and are still working fine....And if I still had my Colecovison, 7800, 2600 and Intellivison (sold them years ago...stupid me) then I'd wager they too would still be working fine. I did buy another PS2 and PS1 (2nd gens) and they work fine...thus why I am staying away until gen2/rev2 of the PS3.

I think it's unfair to assume that problems with early Sony consoles with translate to problems with the PS3.
I have had a original-launch Xbox for years now without a single glitch or problem; however, you can find information on Xbox 360's overheating or the "red rings of death" on just about any forum. It's true that many people have problem-free 360's, but there are more reported problems with the next-gen Xbox than there where with the original.
It's a poor analogy you're trying to make here. It can happen (disc problems with the PS3, that is), but it's not a guaruntee by any means.

Ok, stop the fighting now. The answer to this equasion is easy. This is a PS3 thread. Simply don't post in it if you don't like the PS3. See a Wii thread? Don't like the Wii? Don't post in a Wii thread.

Out of 2 million units I wander how many will go to US?
I hope they do better then Xbox360 did with only 300,000 so I don't have to wait in line for it again :p
Luftwaffle
07-21-06, 09:58 AM
600 dollars should include the price of not having to wait in line. In theory, it should push some people away from the wait for the exclusive price. So, we might not be seeing as much competition. If there is competition, they're probably rich and probably nerds. So, just pay a large, burly man to beat up everyone in line in front of you.
RedDragonXXX
07-21-06, 10:11 AM
I don't know, Xbox360 wasn't cheap neither and there were people literally fighting in line to get one, noone of which I recall were nerds but most of them were college students like me.
I'd go to EB Games and put a preorder, but that's another story :p
If 1mil units make it to US, I think that should be enough to last overnight.

Odd. All the lines I ran into wandering the city looked pretty wimpy. Aside the occasional person who looked like they were carrying a gun. I didn't see any walls of muscle though. No matter. I'm planning some crazy stunt to try to get a few early. I doubt it'll work, but it's worth a shot.

That's because noone wanted to wait in line and they all started showing up 1-2 hour prior to store being open.
BB store that I went to, they had police to come to make sure that everything goes ok but that didn't stop some of the morons that were there.
I remember few 360's showing up on NewEgg about month after the launch, so I might wait for them to get few and buy it.

Still shifty numbers considering thats going off of projected sales rates, not ownership rates.
And we will have to see how many houses burn down first before I make my decision. As of right now, the PS3 is on the bottom of my list of consoles to buy (like there is that many :p). With absolutly absurd and stupid buisness practices of Sony, I am not going to support them just becuase I want to play some games. But we will see. Oh, and I am another person that has one screwed up PS2, and my old PS1 is fuxxored too. And I take very good care of my stuff. Plain and simple accross the board, and repeatedly, Sony has had quality issues. Hell, when I was working at Sam's Club, in the course of a year, we had 8 recalls and Merc Returns just for their TV's. Says something doesnt it? Especialy since we never had one from samsung, and item return rate proved it too.
Sadly, Sony is turning into the new Bose, and I realy hope it doesnt happen.

People in NYC were lining up at 11AM and waiting until the 10 AM store open the next day to get them. They ended up waiting in the rain. I went in at 7PM at Chelsea Best Buy. I had the 27th spot on line, but I didn't want to wait 15 hours overnight in the rain for one. So, I just left. I could have had a platinum with that spot. Oh well, I just didn't have the guts.

I remember they had a big recall on all Bravia models due to some defect some time ago. My friend had to ship his back, but got a new model shortly after.
I own two PS2's, one bought at the launch date and one 6 months after and they all work perfectly without a problem. On the first one when it came out I used to play for 4-5hours every day for a long time and it never gave me any problems.
I also have 3 PS1's. I'm not sure when they launched but it was a first thing I bought when I moved here to US in 1999. I played that first one for very long time and practically nonstop until I lost it when we had to evacuate cause of the hurricane. I got two other shortly after, one for me and one for my brother in law and they still work perfectly fine till this day.
I never had any problem with consoles beside Xbox360 and I had them all, but I hope that PS3 works just as good as my PS1 and PS2 did.
I'm sure that they will work out all the bugs till the release cause they have allot of time, unlike M$ did with 360. I'm mainly getting PS3 because of MGS and BluRay player since most of their exclusive titles have moved to Xbox as well.

I read the article in the magazine about 360's launch date and they had pictures form NYC while it was raining and people looked all ****ed off :D
I called BB around 2PM 1 day prior to launch and they told me that there were people in front of the store waiting so I went there myself. I swear that was the coldest night here in FL that I remember and two days after I got really bad flu since I spent half of my time there without a jacket.

Launch consoles usually have higher failure rates I feel. It's just innate. However, they also carry the bonus of generally being a lot easier to hack.

Its so easy to put down $50 when stores first start taking pre-orders and then there is no waiting at all for a first day unit. I don't see why more people don't do that when the money can be put towards games or anything else in the store if you change your mind later.
Pre-ordering is a god send:)

Pre-ordering around here wasn't a garuanteed unit. You still had to wait on line since they oversold pre-orders all over the place. I know 5 people who didn't get a 360 on release even though they had put money down in February. Also, it's not much, but time value of money is a factor as well.

I ask because the Xbox Live Marketplace is really taking off with releases set every Wednesday. Retro games with updated graphics, co op, and versus along with new games entirely. Street Fighter 2 HF is coming Aug. 2nd with Ultimate MK, Contra, Lumines Live and others later. The market place rocks.
