I have a Linksys BEFSR41 Router, with a Linksys Cable Modem. This Router is connected to three different systems; one, my current computer, which uses the built in 3COM network card, built in to the Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboard. This uses the most up to date drivers. Two, to another, generic Dell computer. The third, to my Xbox 360, which is rarely turned on, never when I am on this computer.

The only computer that has disconnection problems is my current computer, the one with the Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboard. VERY often, usually while playing World of Warcraft and I have Ventrilo open, my connection to this computer will cease to function. I get disconnected from Ventrilo AND World of Warcraft, and I cannot connect to the internet at all. To fix this, about 5% of the time all I have to do is restart the computer. The rest of the time, even after a restart I must completely turn off my Cable Modem/router, and wait about a minute before plugging it back in, then I go back and restart this computer. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. Oftentimes, I must do this several times to get it to work, or switch the port in the router that the ethernet cable is plugged into.

This started about 8 months ago. Recently, in the past week or so, it has started happening more and more frequently. It also sometimes disconnects me from Ventrilo fora short period of time while the game I'm playing stays connected. Sometimes I get large hiccups of lag in game, where people run into walls and things like that for 5-30 seconds, then everyone warps back into place, my latency shoots up to over 1000, and I generally have to start my modem/router up again to make it work normally again, and it does the same thing over and over, regardless.

I use charter internet, though I think it must have something to do with my computer/network card/cable/router, though I really don't know for sure. I would VERY much appreciate help, as at the moment I can't even stay connected to Ventrilo for more than ten minutes without large hiccups/complete disconnects.

Thanks for ANY help or solutions.

Are you torrenting at all? P2P?

Nope, nothing like that. Just happens with normal use.

Try plugging a different NIC into your current computer and see if it happens. If it stops then it is a problem with the integrated NIC.

I got a new NIC today, plugged it in, installed it, did everything I should have; problem still exists. This means it's what, either the router or network cable?

I always hear about these Wireless Routers, are they equally fast as wired? If so, I could possibly eliminate both problems by getting a decent wireless router, correct?

If ANYONE has any ideas, I would very very much appreciate it, I really cannot stand this.

A couple of things to try,,,
> try a different port on the router
> upgrade to a newer firmware for the router - it may address your issue, check their website, they usually document what the firmware fixes.

I've tried both of those, and neither work, unfortunately. Any more ideas?

I had this problem with an 802.11b Dlink router. After many hours of getting mad at it / trying to fix it I got a New Linksys WRT54GS router and the problem went away........

Try plugging your current computer directly into the cable modem. If the problem goes away then it is a router problem.

Ok, so I bought a new router, and it worked well all of last night, through world of warcraft playing and Ventrilo using, but I get home from lunch today, go on the computer, load up WoW, and get disconnected within about 10 minutes. It seems a new router hasn't fixed my problem...any other ideas?

My new router is a D-Link DI-804HV.

Again, I really need some assistance. It is doing this with normal internet browsing now, just disconnecting, and I really am getting frustrated.

Have you tried bypassing the router and running a computer from the modem directly for an extended period of time? If the problem is still happening it could be the modem or an ISP problem. Also, try replacing the cables.

Do as I said earlier and as orion reiterated: run the computer directly to your cable modem. If you're still having the problems then it is something with your ISP or cable modem. Assuming you rent your modem from your cable company, you can just call them and they will resolve it.

It is probably the modem. Buy a Motorola one, they are much better. I had the same issues you have. I had the exact same equipment, replaced the router, problem still existed, replaced the modem, it has been now running for almost a year without being reset.
