For Intel:
PIII700(cCo)-90$-ocs to about 933-1GHZ
Celeron 1.2 Tualatin-115$-ocs to about 1.5-1.7
PIII 1GHZ(cDo)-160$-ocs to about 1.3-1.4

if you have a Tualatin supportable mother board the 1.2 celly is the best bang for buck, but if not go with a PIII 1GHZ...

umm, the tualatin has the same performance per clock speed as a 100mhzFSB PIII, and it oces extremely well so unless you already have a bx or ApolloPro133A or 815E mobo, get a tualatin with a new mobo....

The answer I was gonna say was...

1.2 T-Celeron.

just my opinion.. I agree. If starting with new parts definitely this combo. That is of course if you must have Intel. If not then you would get a whole different answer and a better upgrade path.
