or is the 512MB x1900XT a better choice?
I really like my EVGA 7900GT. The x1900 is a better choice if you want a more powerful card, but it also costs more. If the price difference is not an issue for you then get a x1900.

if you go with the 7900gt avoid the pre-overclocked versions they have a nasty habit of dying. XFX, BFG are good brands

eVGA is very good for the lifetime warrenty and overclocking/3rd party coolers don't void the warrenty.

Yep, this topic seems to be posted about once a week nowadays :bang head
eVGA is the brand of choice, because they guarantee the card to be functional and because they still waranty the card even if you overclock or add new cooling solutions. If you happen to get a defective card from XFX, for instance, I have read that their RMA service is hell on earth. BFG, while better with RMAs (?) is still not on par with eVGA. eVGA's RMA service is so good, I bought one despite the problems, because the lifetime warranty along with the overclock tolerance and the fact that they busted their asses to keep us happy when cards failed just made me feel they had a superior product in terms of service.
I haven't had to use their RMA service, but I have no fear of it, even if this card dies two years from now or even later.
As my sig indicates, my vote goes for the eVGA 7900GT OC. I've had nothing but good experiences with eVGA thus far, and while I've never had to RMA, I've heard from others that it's painless.

EVGA, but only one of the new models with the "8" in the middle of the model number, not the 6.

what do the 8 & 6 mean?
correct me if i'm wrong, but does 8 mean its the updated version? I know the earlier versions had myriad problems associated with them. Also, you might want to check out the KO versions...they have a larger heatsink, which covers the RAM as well as the GPU. I've been debating getting one of these for a while. Maybe if they offer up a MIR or drop in price just a tad more....I really want to upgrade from my current x800gto2

Old model (potential problems) vs new model (no problems)?
At least I think that's what that's about.

The first link is the old card and the second is the new card. The newer versions were shipped a few weeks ago. They switched to a different memory chip to replace the Samsung in the old card that was causing many, many problems.
Below is the 11 page EVGA forum on the 7900GT problems. They have a sticky just for crashed cards.

I just got a BFG7900GT as a gift, and I did'nt have very good feelings about BFG, but the card is suprisingly good.
If I had a choice, I'd get an eVGA. get the KO model if you're not on water
