Oh well, it sucks that it's going to be an nvidia/intel vs amd/ati battle but at least I came out on one side instead of a mixed side. It would suck to be an intel/ati fan or an amd/nvidia fan.

They probably did it cause AMD is buying ATI..

Intel doesnt own Nvidia so its not exactly the vs you mentioned. In fact this buyout may make Nvidia feel a lot better and strengthen the AMD/Nvidia relationship..

Technically the license wasnt pulled, it was null and void as of the buyout. Remember, AMD flat out bought ATI. ATI as a company doesnt exist anymore, and that means any licenses have to be reaquired by AMD as ATI is now just a brand name of AMD.

And it wont be "nVidia/Intel vs ATI/AMD". Intel gains nothing from merging/buying nVidia, as they can already do everything nVidia does (do remember that Intel already sells more chipsets and GPUs than nVidia). AMD bought ATI to expand their technology and product base to better compete with Intel. Now AMD can do CPUs, chipsets (hopfully better this time), video cards, not to mention the large number of ATI products that are in many day to day devices like cell phones, TVs, DVD players, etc.

The same thing that's always been wroing with buying ATI brand video cards: Linux. Hopefully AMD will do something about that, and if they do I hope it will be retro-active, so everyone with an old 8500/9500/9700/9800/whatever won't be left behind.

i was reading on either anand or toms and i read yesterday that this wasnt actually, tecnically, true. I think the source of this article is INQ, and they goofed.
allso, the article said rd600 plans havnt changed, and really the only downer about it all is that all the intell side has had the "post-rd-600" dreams crushed.
its interesting stuff.

orionlion82, I read the same thing (on a different site). It really made me happy that the RD600 is still in the game, it would make no sense dropping a chipset so close to launch. Also AFAIK AMD(ATI) won't make any significant changes until 2008.

PS- shouldn't this be in the motherboards section and not Video Cards? This is all about ATI's chipset license (for Intel motherboards)....they don't just make graphics cards.

AMD & ATI Answers to Rumormongering There have been a lot of rumors and assumptions flying since Monday morning on what exactly some of the finer points to the AMD / ATI merger are going to be. ATI has just answered some of those questions.

We will keep this short sweet and to the point. Here are some quotes directly from ATI that address some of the rumors we have recently been hearing around the Net.

ATI's Intel License

There is no truth to the rumor that Intel has pulled ATI's chipset license. We continue to ship Intel chipsets under license.

AMD's commitment to GPUs

The merger with AMD reinforces ATI's position as the world's best GPU supplier. AMD is absolutely committed to maintaining and extending that leadership. The merger gives access to AMD technologies and resources - for example, custom memory design - which will raise performance and reduce costs, further increasing ATI's competitiveness. Also, AMD has been extraordinarily effective in the channel, and access to their know-how, experience, and network, will be a powerful plus for ATI.

Intel platforms

AMD acquired ATI so it could be the world's number one graphics processor supplier. AMD is absolutely committed to supporting graphics on Intel platforms. Hector Ruiz, AMD's CEO, made this completely clear on the conference call that announced the merger. He stated that AMD wanted to increase choice in the market, and that included ATI graphics on an Intel platform.

On the gift to Nvidia

Nvidia has seen the writing on the wall, and doesn't like what it's saying. The PC market is a tough place to be without any friends. ATI now has all the resources of AMD behind it, and will be producing faster, more compact GPUs and reaching the channel more effectively than ever before. Nvidia's words are bravado, designed to confuse the market while the company tries to find a way to compete now that it's standing alone.

That is the story I have heard so far on this.

*bought* (past tense) :p

i'm running AMD/ATI so this merger won't make a large impact on me. i think this merger is a good thing because it allows AMD to grow to almost the size of Intel.

Is that article link supposed to be a sarcastic complement to the text of your post? Because it pretty much says that the source of that rumor is worthless.

That rumour is not unique to that site.

It cannot be proven true or false, for now we will just have to wait and see. Also if intel were to do this they could face even more anti trust charges with viable proof this time.

It was posted on TeamATi's site, and I just posted it over here.

AMD is in the process of buying ATI. Buying out a company isn't as easy as heres the cash take it and give us the company. Theres plenty of paper work and im sure with a larger company it takes quiet a bit longer (a few months) to sort out all the paper work between lawyers and executives.

And shareholder/ regulatory approval. If its anti competitive or if the shareholders feel their getting ripped off the the deal is off.

To add, then there is international laws to get past too. AMD is a US held company and ATi is from our friends up in the North.

I would assume it is going to be some time before we see any pure after the sale products.

The irony of my machine.. lol I have AMD(CPU), ATi(vCard) and Nvidia(nf3 chipset) in one spot.. All I need it a Intel in this and I am set!!
