Hey guys,

I rescently had a friend streamline my XP and its fast as HELL !! Only 190mb windows CD...everything works good on it...but he removed TTS and i kinda liked it for ventrilo and stuff. I would ask him how to get it back, but he went to Hawaii for the whole summer....

Now, i have tried hours and hours installing each one of these on this page:

http://www.bytecool.com/voices.htm

I have installed the MS TTS on this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/reader/developers/downloads/tts.asp

But it still wont come back...Anybody got any ideas?

EDIT: I just also followed all of this site and still nothing :(

Thanks, ps2cho

Is the "Speech" applet available in the Control Panel, and if so... does it open "Speech Properties"? I believe that in order to reinstall Speech, it needs to be added through Regional and Language Options. Control Panel | Regional and Language Options | "Languages" tab | "Details" button | Under Installed services, click Add | In the Input language list, click a language | Select the Speech check box, and then click an option in the list.

Speech control panel:

The Speech Control Panel enables you to list the compatible speech recognition and text-to-speech engines installed on your system and to view and customize their settings for your use. When you install the file, it adds a speech icon to your Control Panel that you can open. Note that this application will only install on Windows® 95, Windows 98, Windows NT® 4.0, and Windows 2000 systems.

Download Download the Speech Control Panel (927 KB exe)

anybody got any other ideas? Any way to get it off the original CD?

Start | Run | Type...

%programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech\sapi.cpl

... and click OK. Does the Speech Properties window open? Also these KB articles may be of some help to you:

How to install and configure speech recognition in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306537

Install speech recognition
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../langbar_speech_getting_started.mspx?mfr=true

No that command does not work -- reason be, there is no speech folder in the Microsoft Shared. Going to use the links you found me. Thanks for your time Redduc!

Ok i followed those and still nothing. I used Word to install the speech recognition engine, but the speech control panel is still missing...

Browse to the %systemroot%\inf directory | Right click the sapi5.inf file --> select Install. If the sapi5.inf fle is missing from the \inf directory, insert your XP CD and open the System Configuration Utility (Start | Run | Type msconfig, and click OK) | On the "General" tab hit the "Expand file" button...

In the "File to restore" field, type sapi5.inf
In the "Restore from" field, browse to the i386 directory on the CD
In the "Save file in" field, type or browse to the C:\Windows\inf directory

I don't mean to bump an old post, but this problem is exactly what I've been going through, and after following the steps within this post, I'm still without a Speech folder. Like the OP, I had used a streamlined version of XP and followed the steps on the MS site with no success at obtaining a speech folder option in the CP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have "Accessibility" under "Accessories" in your start menu? Narrator is the text to speech i know of in XP. you could run it from a "run" command

%SystemRoot%\system32\narrator.exe

No accessibility under options, and Narrator returned an error when ran in the command prompt.

I also installed windows 2007 in the hopes it would fix the issue, but still no TTS in vent or a speech folder within CP.

I might as well throw a couple more ideas out there. If you have TweakUI, make sure sapi.cpl is checked... TweakUI--> Control Panel | Check: sapi.cpl. Also check in the registry... anything listed under this key will be hidden from the Control Panel:

Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\DisallowCpl

If XP Pro only (doesn't exist in XP Home)... Open the Group Policy editor (Start | Run | Type gpedit.msc, and click OK | Navigate to...

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel

... "Hide specified control panel applets".

You don't show the Control Panel Administrative Template in Group Policy?
