Exiting games won't return to windows?

I recently reformated and did a clean install of windows XP. I reinstalled all my drivers and all that goodness. But now whenever I exit a game...any game, the resolution doesn't return to the normal windows screen. I end up having to alt+F4ing everything and telling it to hibernate, then wake it back up in order to get back to windows...ideas?

try different display drivers.. maybe check for patches for your game...

what all is it doing it with ?
