does anyone know how I could figure out what temperatures my PIII 500Mhz 512kb l2 on a tyan s1854 board is running at?

Assuming that the case's throughput and HSF are adequate, there's no need to be concerned about the temp of your PIII. OTOH, if you're OCing the CPU and the mainboard has no built-in temp sensors, work and money are required.

Thermal probes aka thermistors can measure your case temp easily enough. Touching the CPU with a thermistor usually requires that a hole be drilled through the HS.
