yea i set up my network with two pcs. i installed the two Nics and connected them through a crossover cabel. The network works all right with file ans printer sharing but when i try to share my dial up, it doesnt work. I'v tried the local host 192.168.0.1 ans subnet of 255.255.255.0 and on the second nic the ip address of 192.168.0.2 and subnet of 255.255.255.0 and defult gateway to 192.168.0.1 but it dont work. I tried pinging local host on every computer and it comes back with a response but when i connect to the net and from the second pc i ping the ip address of my first pc which gets an ip assigned from my isp but it says timed out.

here is a list of my protocolson PC 1:

Client for microsoft networks
microsoft family logon
D-link DFE-530TX+Pci adapter
Dial up adapter
IPX/SPx compatible protocol->D-link DFE-530TX+PCI adapter
NetBeui->D-link DFE-530TX+PCI adapter
TCP/IP->D-link DFE-530TX+PCI adapter
TCP/IP->Dial-up adapter
File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

some people told me to remove the ipx/spx->D-link... and the NetBeui->Dlink... but when i do that, i cant see my other computer in my network neigbhor hood.
is there anything i can do?

Ok, I'm not very familiar with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) since I have only messed with it a very little bit, but I'll try.

First you have to get ICS set up on the pc with the modem, as I recall you need to have a static ip on this nic, but ICS tells you what to use (I think- if not 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0 is fine). ICS sets up that pc as a DHCP Server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

After the first pc is done (and rebooted I think) you must set up the second computer to use DHCP. When that pc boots it will look for a DHCP Server and find the other pc, which will give it an ip address to use.

That should take care of it.

I think ICS is installed from the add/remove software- Windows Components section in the Control Panel.

Good Luck

that didint work either oh yea and i removed ipx/spx->d-link...but i couldint remove the netbeui->dlink...because i couldint log on to the network without it.

What are your tcp/ip settings?

I run tcp/ip exclusively, and I don't think much of netbeui-clogs things up IMHO.

Keep trying to get it though, go through the help files, try MS website for faqs too.

If all else fails, I can toss an old modem in one of my rigs and install it- I did it once before, but it wrecks all my network settings on the pc!

my tcp/ip settings are:

under the ip address tab:
ip address is 192.168.0.1
subnetmask 255.255.255.0

under the WINS config:
disable WINs resolution is on

Gateway
empty

DNS config
disable DNS

Bindings
client for microsoft networks is checked
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks is checked
microsoft family logon is checked

Advanced
allow binding to ATM has a value of NO
set this protocol to be deafult is off

NetBios
nothing is checked

the second PC
everthing is the same except the ip address is 192.168.0.2 the subnetmask is 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is 192.168.0.1.

no u dont have to put in ur old modem cuz i dont want u to mess anything up.

ok, I'm back:)

Allrighty then!
settings look ok, mostly: did you already install ICS?

If you did, the second pc should be set to use dhcp I believe.
ICS uses some weird ip scheme ( the thing that messes up my network!) to connect the other pc's to the internet server (pc running ICS.)

I don't remember what settings (if any) can be configured in ICS, but you might want to look for something that will give you the status of ICS.

Try installing this program (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm) on the first computer. This is sort of a routing software.

So on the second computer's IE settings, in the connection tab, in the proxy settings input:

HTTP: 192.168.0.1 port: 6588
SECURE: 192.168.0.1 port: 6588

FTP: 192.168.0.1 port: 21

Uncheck the Automatically Detect Settings and stuff, leave the "Use a Proxy server" checked.

Then try to open some web site.

Hope this helps!

another thought( i'm going for a record- like 10 thoughts this weekend!)

There is a setting SOMEWHERE that enables/disables autodial...
could that be the problem?

yea i put the setting on, never dial a connection and this sh*t still aint working. I seouresly think its a TCP/IP problem because all my games run ok on IPX/SPX ok and when i set them to tcp/ip none of them work. quake 3 works but i think that uses Netbeui.

Running the multiple protocols is screwing me up a bit (lol) I only use tcp/ip.
try this: at a dos prompt, enter ipconfig and see what it tells you. You should get ip address, subnet and gateway.

if all looks ok, try to ping the other pc, if it connects ok do the same from the other rig.

This tests the ip configuration: either it works, which means tcp/ip is fine, or it doesn't. At least we'll know where to go from here!

FIRST PC:

0 ETHERNET ADAPTER:
Ip address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
Deafult Gateway: blank

SECOND PC:

0 ETHERNET ADAPTER:
Ip address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
Deafult Gateway: blank
1ETHERNET ADAPTER:
Ip address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Deafult Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Are you using ICS or the AnalogX proxy?

Is the second system the one that is connected to the dsl?

Bmxpunk86pl
11-18-01, 08:06 PM
no right now i turned everthing off. and im using a dial up on the first pc, no dsl (kinda expensive, gonna wait for cabel to show up)

dugans
11-18-01, 08:18 PM
ok, dialup not dsl( confused with another thread!lol)

the second rig shows 2 ethernet connections: both nics?

Bmxpunk86pl

sorry i forgot to remove dial up adapter on my second pc, so thats why it showed two ethernet adapters. but now i removed it and it just says

0 ethernet adapter:
ip address 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
deafult gate way: 192.168.0.1

but i still have the dial up adapter installed in my 1st pc and a nic and all it shows is one ethernet adapter in ipconfig

oh yea when ever i install the NIC on my computer, windows freezes and i have to reboot and its all right again. i have nothing on my pci slots besides the NIC. the nic is sharing a IRQ address with my display card which is irq 11. could that be the problem? i dont see any yellow question marks when i go to system thought.

dugans

I lost a post????

Is the pc with dialup the one you're on now?

Can you set the ip address on the nic in the first pc to 192.168.0.1?

We're at the beginning again, but thats probably a good thing!

The nic/video irq: this may be ok- 3com nic's don't like sharing irq and neither do some video cards- but if it looks ok in the control panel applet it usually is.
