I got an athlon XP 1800, but with everything at the default setting in the bios, it only runs @ 1.4 ghz. I upped the FSB to 134 and then it does 1.5 (The multiplier setting still on auto). I then upped the FSB again to 135. The chip dropped back down to 1.4 ghz (The multiplier still on auto) Is the CPU supposed to do that?

That processor is supposed to run at 1.53 Ghz. What are you using to measure the speed? Acutally, give us all of your specs, and we can help...mobo, psu, memory, etc...

Ok, here it is. I am using shuttle ak3.1 mobo, I have 728 megs ocz ram. I am using Motherboard Monitor and Sisoft Sandra to mesure the CPU. I unlocked the CPU by filling in the holes with krazy glue and then using conductive paint. I have gotten the CPU up to 1.6 ghz using a different multiplier and FSB. I am just not sure why the it is running slow by default and then also changing the multiplier on me. Should the CPU change multipliers when the mobo settings are on auto?:( This is my first OC so I am not to sure what to expect! Thanks for your help!!!

Ok, I am not familiar with your mobo, so I am asking for back-up...

Anyone?

Second, some mobos will go back to default after an unsuccessful overclock attempt. My MSI will go back to default fsb if I push it too high...

Also, have you updated your bios? Some mobos need a bios update to support the XP.

Finally, as I figure it, in your case the default is 133fsb with a 11.5 multiplier. Any reason to believe your mobo is not defaulting to this? If you set it to this, it works, right?

After default, failed overclocks could be attributed to the memory, power supply, etc.

Those specs would be helpful, as well...

Did you have this "problem" before you unlocked the cpu?
What does cpuid show your multiplier is set at for default?

Try not putting the multiplier to auto, and put it to 11.5, maybe the mobo is putting a wrong mutliplier

I am using a Enermax 350w power supply. I haven't changed the vcore or anything. Just the FSB. I upped it once more to 136, but still with only a 1.49 ghz speed.

Should I change the multiplier or just continue to up the FSB with the multiplier set at auto?

Also, does the mobo control the default multiplier or the CPU? If the CPU, than why doesn't the speed change when the FSB goes up?

Thanks for all your help!!!!:)

CPU controls the default multiplier...what you should do first is update your motherboard BIOS, from the shuttle site www.spacewalker.com

Which revision of the AK31 are you using?

If that fails, then take a look at the core of your chip and make sure it says 1800, not 1600...

The mobo is Rev 3.1. I will update the Bios. I got the XP in a retail box, and it said 1800. Do you think they could put a 1600 in their by mistake?!

I am changing to a different HSF, so when I do, I will look on the chip.

If the CPU controlls the multiplier, then why doesn't the cpu run faster when I up the FSB? (see first post)

Thanks!

The cpu is not unlocked correctly or the bios is unable to correctly interpret the cpu's settings.

If it is not unlock correctly, then should I pull it out and try to re-do it? I made sure none of the bridges crossed before I put it in. It seems to let me change the multiplier just fine, it is just the default that seems to low.

Thanks again!!:)

Use wcpuid to check whats goin on.
It will show the multiplier and speed correctly for the xp cpus.
Your cpu might be running faster than the bios shows on boot.
If you change the multiplier and wcpuid shows the correct settings as you change it then its unlocked correctly.

Get wcpuid here if you need it :
