ok, I have a Netgear Rt314 gateway router, it has 4 ports, I am using 2. I am gonna give my neighbors access b/c I am a nice guy (they just got married). Anyways, they have 2 computers, and I could run 2 lines over there, BUT I found this Dual Modular Jack at Da Shack and was wondering if it would work....

This is how everything would be connected
*edit* Basically I want to know if 2 computers could be hooked up to this jack I have......
**edit** Oh and if I need to splice a 2 pieces of Cat 5 line together, what is the best and most inexpensive(if there is such a way) way to do that??

Here is what the Jack looks like

I'm not really an expert in networking, but I would do it this way:

I agree with super cuz it just looks super:p

Super's way is the best in my oppinion.
I've heard of people splitting a cat5 cable, but haven't tried it- and I'm not sure if I trust the reports either!
But hubs are cheap: hook 1 cat5 to the uplink port and get a cheap hub ( as in the pic above). Hubs are CHEAP.

or you could just run 2 lines, it's not much harder than 1

I would NOT recomend runnig cat5 UTP outside...
It is a HUGE Lightning hazard. It is NOT shielded...

*****UPDATE******
Tried the 2 computers on one line, as expected, it didn't work....
Gonna drill a hole in ajoining wall and feed them a line..figured it would be easier and safer than having it near outside forces  . Besides it only drywall, we can patch it up before we move out.
Was gonna do 2 lines, but alas I only have enough Cat 5 to run one line.....

go get a shovel...
then make a shallow trench between the two houses.
get some pvc, lay it itn the trench.
and run your cat5 in the pvc.

Well you can get by with only 1 cat5 wire. Ethernet only uses 4 of the 8 wires in it, 1,2,3, and 6. just make sure you wire it correctly. Depending on how far apart your houses are is whether you need a repeater (hub), but cat5 does 100 meters which is quite a distance. I don't know how big your house is, but it's more than enough to go from opposite ends of my house to my neighbor's.
If you run a pvs pipe under the ground and put the wire through that I wouldn't worry too much about lighting. I'd be more concerned about if your electrical lines are underground. Not only because you don't want to put a shovel into one, but the high voltage can cause some interferance in the line.
This isn't very cost effective, but wireless is also an option. I can be down the street and still be on my network. Of course I live in a redeveloped corn field, so it's all flat open land.

simple words from a simple me
CAT-5 outside BAD
Fibre-optic outside GOOD
it eliminates the nastyness of people getting fried while sitting at a comp in a lightning storm if something untoward should happen.
Look MA, that Cisco course is coming in handy.
And yeah I noticed the Adjoining wall comment so go for it. just run that sucker of a copper wire.
I'm sure you can make an CAT-5 to CAT-5 connector, my teach and I discussed it one time, it just involves a couple of wall jacks creatively conected.
As for only using 4 wires, that's all well and good, but you have to take into account the fact that CAT-5 cables are in certain orders to insure proper cross-cancellation, which is a good thing, because without it any cable over 3 feet long is a very iffy thing.
Gee I'm long-winded today.
Simple words huh?

if you dig deep enoght it shouldnt be a problem
if you feel really bad about it there are
A) surge protectors with cat-v slots in them
B) just rap a copper wire around the cat v as you go and then ground that to there pluming system ( only one persons thought you dont want lightnign comeing over the cat-v burning it all up if they or you get hit)
i wouldnt do fiber optic its to expesive for the converters
have you mabey tired infra red i saw it some where big infra red lazer you point at there house and they have a transceiver
i dont know much about it other than it exists

From what I understand, they are both in the same BUILDING, just in different apartments/condos/units.
So drilling the hole in the drywall should be no problem and the CAT5 will be fine.
No need to dig like they did in WWII!

yeah, in order to not look like an ass and an idiot, yes, that is entirely correct, through adjoining wall, drywall, not a problem I don't think.
nog
i'm slightly insane, don't worry, I've still got a taser
One cat5 wire using all 4 pairs...tricky termination since specs don't allow for more than a half inch of uninsulated wire. It still works, but cuts down on distance limitations. Should work fine for this application....Although may cause retransmits and reduced throughput.

oddly enough half of my brain knows exactly what you're saying and the other half has absolutely no clue.
Still insane with more firepower than should be legal for my state of mind

just have a patch or crossover thru the dry wall no problem
Once you've run the wire, you'll likely have to connect it to a jack. In order to connect it to the jack, you'll have to strip back the insulation to connect to the RJ45 outlet. According to cat5 specs, you shouldn't strip back more than a half inch...which works ok if connecting to one outlet. But if you're going to use two outlets, you'll have to strip more of the insulation. It's just a specs thing...the connection will work, but you may notice less data throughput than if you were using, say a patch cable.

MUAHAHAHA I understand everything, and yet at the same time I don't.
This is probably ****ing people off by now, I should stop, but I need more posts, perhaps I should put actual effort and useful thought into it
oh well
