View Full Version : Trouble installing win98?!! (a bit lengthy, but I really need the help)

My friend just got a new maxtor 20 gig hard drive and he asked me to install it on his computer. Well, I installed it and attempted to install win98. It got all the way through the install, to the last step where it reboots for the last time and finishes the install. Then I get a BSOD that says "fatal error: can't write to drive C:" and the install doesn't finish. I've tried everything, and can't figure it out (including trying the drive on another system, where it worked fine). So I tried win95, and it wouldn't install either!
So I'm thinking it may have something to do with the new HD conflicting with his setup:

AMD K6 266
biostar m5ala mobo(with most recent bios)
generic video/modem/sound
32 megs sdram
32x cdrom

The wierd thing is that his system works fine with win95 and his old 4gig HD. I agree that a new system is in order, but this is really bugging me, and I want to get this installed right for my friend. Thanks in advance - Joni

is the drive partitioned correctly ? and is it formatted FAT32 ?

Yes, I thought it might be a bad format, so I did it again and repartitioned. To answer your question, it is formatted and partitioned right...Fat32.

did you try installing Windows on another system, then bring the hard drive to his ? The only thing required then is the reinstall of drivers and stuff

If I did that would there be a problem with the mobo chipset drivers? I have Via, and his is Ali. Would it still boot up on his system, or would the conflict prevent it?

I can't be sure on this, but **I THINK**, as they are only drivers, you could easily reinstall them for his system. And as there isn't anything to loose, it's worth a try ;) . Just if you try, make sure you disconnect the hard drive in the computer you're gonna install the os on, and put on his hd as Master, or it could try installing the os over the one currently installed

Well it's worth a shot :)
I'll give it a try and post the results.
I hope it works, because I'm extremely frustrated at this point
