Prob the first time this will be used is with ATi's forthcoming rd600 conroe chipset, which is not to be confused with the r600 dx10 chip.
the rd600 will have 3 16x pci-e lanes with the third using anywhere from a x1600 to a x1950 for devoted physics. NVidia will prob release a contender for conroe too but at a later date.
However I will/would wait at least until dx10 till I even look at a PPU.
However if this follows usual ATi fashion by the time it is released the next gen will only be 1-2 months away, like what happened with the horrible lanch of crossfire which was shortly followed by the x1800 series which was also delayed.
If nVidia offers something similar it will prob be added to the nForce 590 conroe campatable chipset.
