View Full Version : Pooling Our Resources

This idea vaguely danced through my head. This is somewhat similar to the idea Cy had of posting what spare parts we have that might benefit others. I say somewhat similar because of this - what about throwing "spare" money into a pot to help build new machines? Now this opens up a big can of worms I know, but I'm just tossing out the idea to be played with. Among the problems are who collects the money, who does the buying, who builds and operates the equipment, and lastly under what name. I think the easiest is the latter - pooled resources go under a new member name such as overclockers, etc. Perhaps this is a bit wacky. It just crossed my mind, so I thought why not let everybody else have a look at it. There are many problems with it - perhaps too many, but just maybe we could work out a way to combine more than just spare parts and benefit the team - truly a project for the hard core members.

ok, now that TC has the #1 spot he has his new project: he wants to be #2 as well!:D

Seriously, most of my pc cash is going towards getting a couple more systems in my farm: an old k6 and a new duallie;) .

But if we found a way to do it I could manage to throw a few bucks in.

I remeber this idea comming up a ways back.
Ive liked the idea of a part swap from the begining..

What if we had a sticky in this section just for posting of spare and wanted parts? anyone like this idea?

As for money being donated there are services out there such as PayPal that may help, but a money collection would open a very large can of worms I think we should stear away from this idea,it would take alot of time and planing to get it right and even then it still might cause problems

First impression: good. Seems like an interesting project.

On another note, I posted some parts for sale on a classifieds section (to remain unnamed, but very, very close :)) and offered discounts to the ocsetiteam. Seems like a good way to go for those of us who want cash (greedy, greedy) but still want to help the team.

BTW, if that's a bad idea, someone let me know. I haven't thought it through that far. :)

I have seen other teams do this very thing. They select a "volunteer" to host the team farm and then either donate old/spare parts to be used directly in the farm machines or sell them/donate to be sold to add to the pot to build up machines for the team farm.

One thing they settled from the beginning was that the contributions were being given to the host free and clear so that in the end there would not be an ugly scene of trying to redivide what little money might come from selling the team farm. This is why it was kept to small donations/parts for use/sell. No-one needs to "lose" any serious money or resources over something like this.

I like the idea and would actually love to host the farm but I just don't have the space or power here in my one bedroom apt.!

My suggestion would be to select a very seniour team member as host and decide that the donations are one way and should be limited to a fairly small amount. Even it it only builds two or five machines, hopefully duallie amd somethings, then that would be some nice numbers for the team. The host donates space/maintenance/electricity/labor to the farm as his/her "share". Anything above and beyond that is up to them.

It seemed like a decent idea last night (thanks to a couple drinks most likely) but now it doesn't. I definitely can't host the computers here. Convincing people to donate money and be assured it's being handled properly is not easy. I think perhaps the spare parts sticky thread would be best for now. I've got some stuff I could get rid of.

Well being just about the only member on the team that has free electricity. I could host the farm. I have a 302sq ft office. I can by the storage methods(ie shelves or whatever) cause i need them neways. i have backup power in case of a failure or whatever might try to get in thru the outlet. Let me know if the team is interested. If you would like this idea plz email me @ luke@kbyte-computers.com. Thanks for giving me the chance to be a member of sucha great team. keep up the crunchin folks.

Well there certianly is nothing wrong with trying to help each other maximize our setups by trading/selling some extra/old hardware. Not a bad way to help move the team forward.

Very tricky to implent, but possible. How about instead of putting it under a new name or someones name. We could start a contest. Maybe for the New People only to help build their stats? Have the separate farm crunch for the winner of that week. It would be interesting, but I think most people would spend their spare money on their farms first. Good thought though.

Most of my spare parts are tied up in corporate red tape. However, I do have a few older pentiums, pentium pro's and pentium II's that could be allocated to a joint team member. If someone wanted to set up an email such as ocsetiteam@somemailservice.com then I would be happy to start running those machines under that member id. I don't put them under mine because of my vanity towards my average WU times, they would overly inflate my 5.3 hr ave.

I was thinking in the line of ocsetiteam @ hotmail.com or something like that. Then any spare machines could be set up under that ID and then joined to the team.

What paltry machines. Who would dare to run them near your farm. :D

I've got an Intel quad pro server sitting here. Somebody could use it as I can't seem to sell it for diddly. Problem is shipping it. I suppose I could pull the board and the cpu and ram risers if somebody could put it together without the rest of the gigantic case
