View Full Version : 805 Overclocking Project
I am currently trying to clock up an 805D system. I have the 805D to 4000 Mhz, but can't keep the system stable beyond that. I have tried VCore voltages up to 1.65V with no luck and don't like having the VCore that high anyway. I have seen people getting these up to 4300 Mhz with the VCore ~1.55
If you are having success with this, could you take a look here and see what I can do to take this to the next few levels of the overclock?
thanks,
CC

Problem: Ultra 550w X2-Connect PSU
dual +12V rails at 17amps and 18amps... these procs like strong, quality single rails while overclocked.
All chips are different, maybe that's the limit for that one on water. I'm not familiar with that board. I just think it's the chip, and the cooling. Some extreme temps can buy you more OC.

ahhhhhh! ultra psu! ditch it. there dangerous. just read greenmaji's sig lolol
honestly, there not very good quality power supplies at all and will probably eventually kill your whole system.

Chances are that power supply units circuitry is strained to the max right now.

I once ran into that wall.....I was using a p5wd2 at the time. Changed to an abit a8wd and got 4.2, and now with my P5w dh getting 4.4. (only stable at 4.36 though).

Yes, if you're serious about overclocking your system, ditch that Ultra. They have a tendancy to have a meltdown under heavy loading, causing large holes to appear in your wallet.
If on a budget, get a high power Fortron Source or Antec power supply. Otherwise, PC Power & Cooling is the way to go.
If you can id pick up an OCZ520w. They've got a solid +12v @ 33amps. Last time I checked newegg they were ~$109.

Ultra PSU lol.. I'm giving a shot at warning everyone (there is CERTIN Ultra models that are made by Winteh and wont burn your house down) but Ultra doesnt make a PSU of the calaber that you'll need to overclock your smithfeild beast there ;)
And cooling.. higher clocks, lower Vcore sounds like "they" have a better cooling solution.

Okay, new PSU inbound

Please elaborate, "they"? and what?
thanks

PLEASE READ the pressler/cedarmill known issues sticky up top before buying a PSU.. the last page of it would have enough info  I know your 805D isnt a pressler, but for power consumption just assume it is, its safer that way (its power consumption is nearly identical to presslers anyway)
when I refered to "they" I was refering to the people that you said were getting higher clocks at lower volts then you but you didnt link to or explain those rigs. I dont know what "they" are using to cool there CPU and furthermore what you are using..
What are you using to cool your CPU??

Okay I understand now. I am currently using a watercooling setup: Zalman CPU waterblock with 2 x Tt 12cm radiators. NB/SB are cooled by stock heatsinks. CPU is cooling quite well, I have been seeing the mobo temp geting pretty high.
I am going to bank on the PSU issue. I have another project going (I have lots of projects going), but another OC project. It's on my website too (www.tccook.com). I am OCing a X2 4800 on an ASUS A8N32SLI D. I have an Ultra PSU on that one as well. About a week ago, the mobo just quit POSTing. I went through the whole 9 yards on troubleshooting and never figured out why. I did send it back to ASUS (don't know what will become of it). The point is, with what I am learning from you, maybe the PSU killed that one.
I am going to keep plugging on it.
1) In the BIOS I have the memory clock set to 667 (PC-5300 667) and I get a CPUZ mem clock reading of 337? Should this be set to 1334Mhz to get a mem reading of 667 Mhz?
2) I have set the Vcore voltage as high as 1.6v, but see the idle voltage reading not going more than 1.5v Similarily when vcore = 1.5v, the reading is around 1.4 at idle. Is this b/c the vcore will increase with load to the CPU?
3) Probably an old question but, what is the mobo temperature? NB? SB? Voltage regulators? All of the above averaged? None of the above?
thanks again for your help.

Me personaly.. I would remove that PSU from my computer ASAP. and get a quality PSU with high amps on a single 12V rail.
trying to work on overclocking it now could resut in bad things happening. If its your only rig, put it back down to stock and run just the equipment needed (unplug extra HD's and such) untill the new PSU can be installed.

Are you clocking through the bios or through 3rd party software? You're just wanting "bench stable", like to squeeze out a pi or 3D, right? Have you removed those heatpipes over the fets ,SB and NB, cleaned up the stock TIM and replaced it with AS5? Maybe lap the bottoms too. Then the 805 IHS probably need some lapping too. Does that board come with the fet fans like the ones on the new Asus boards? If not get a fan on those.
Good luck. Make sure you post your D805 results in the "805 results" (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=445167&page=6) thread.

will do ASAP

Clocking through BIOS. I am wanting long-term stable, not just bench-stable. I have removed none of the stock heat-sink hardware. It does come with 2 of the FET fans.
thanks.

Well long term is another story. My OC results on my water loop weren't off the wall better than my regular air. And my big typhoon w/ central AC tap was better than my water. My water wasn't too bad, a 77bonnie, 2*120mm 115CFM, mag7 (in water bowl) and an Apogee1/2".
For stable I don't know how much you're gonna get past 4GHz 24/7. What are you load temps at 4GHz? Also does that board have droop problems?

+1
with some crap Aspire 480 watt POS I had before, my max clocks were 3.6 from a SL7PN....pretty damn crappy.
I got a Modstream 520w, and couldn't be happier. It was quieter, looks nicer, and had better power. Now I can get to 4.0GHz fine, its just my water cooling can't keep up with it :)
