I am buying a new computer system and I am an absolute newbie to overclocking. Now my question is this? What chip and motherboard combination would you recommend? As I said, I am a newbie to Overclocking so therefore I do not know what combination would give me better performance, speeds and reliability. So any help would be much appreciated!

ok here it goes
1. welcome to the forums, i hope we can help you around in the OverClocking world
2. Im not sure if you want to buy a new system tomorrow or in a month or so
3. Where do you live (computer parts are much cheaper in the US)
4. How much money do you want to spend
5. I see you posted this in the amd section so i guess you want an amd
6. i would buy a via kt266a chipset mobo and if you have lots of money left put an ahtlon xp 1800+ in there (they should OC nicely so i heard)
so if you can, give us some more details and we will try to help you even better

First of all thanks a lot for replying, much appreciated.
Now for further explaining.
First of all, I live in Australia and I am going to buy it in the next month or so.
Yes i am thinking along the lines of AMD. I am planning to spend around $2,000 initially on the system and was thinking about Thunderbird K7 1.4. Where I am getting it from they are about $284 (Aus) without the fan.
But if you think the XP's are better chips then I will go for an XP 1500 which is bout $295 as I do not have a whole heap of cash, I probably could not go much higher.
Overall this is just going to be a fairly standard system for some games and DVD playback, to start off with, the rest of Upgrades I am getting elsewhere later on. It will have just a 40 gb HDD, Geforce MX400, 256 mb Ram, 10/100 network card, SB Live Digital 5.1, 16x pioneer dvd, 40x16x10 Burner, modem (not determined what type yet) + usual.
www.microtrade.com.au is the company i getting it from. Problem is i get discount there even though they dont have largest range so trying to get as much from there as i can. So if you could have a look there and see what you recommend from there I would be most appreciative. Thanx
I do not know if this will help
