View Full Version : Is this a good watercooling setup?

Here is my custom watercooling kit I am building.
1. Black Ice 2 Radiator with 3/8" Fittings
2. Danger Den Maze 2 Water Block 3/8" Fittings
3. 12volt, 500gph Reservoir Pump Combo
4. 350-400Watt Power Supply
5. 2 120mm Panaflow Fans H1A
6. 2 120mm Panaflow Fans L1A or M1A
Comments please. I want the high panaflows because when I attach them to my baybus, I can have them at lower speeds, and if I want more cooling then I can just flip a switch. I am also going to have maybe some other fans for just air blowing threw the computer, because I am not going to cool my video card, or motherboard chipsets. What fans would be good for that the low, medium or high panaflows? Do the panaflows all consume the same power? Should I do the same thing I am doing with my radiator by running the fans lower then just up the power if I want cooling? Thanks.

Your strategy for the fans sound good. You chose some good parts, although 110V pumps I read are quieter.

are they more expensive then $65?

Depending on the flow rate you want, they're cheaper than the 12V ones. You can get a good Eheim 1048 (160 gph) for around $55.

yeah but the one i am getting has 500gph

That seems way overkill but it may be neccessary because of the pressure drop that blackice rads have. It's huge
Well a couple of things. First of all you should go 1/2'. Second why buy a Black Ice2 when the extreme can be had for the same money and will be available in a couple of weeks. It is setup for 1/2' and low pressure drop. It is the same size of the original black ice but thicker and will probably outperform the Black Ice2 by a tad.

Why use a 500 gph pump and cripple it with 3/8" fittings?
Also an eheim 1250 (317gph) can be had for $67 from dangerden, I'd recommend that over a 12V pump.

Damnit I thought my mind was made up. Ok the Black Ice Extreme looks good, does anyone know when it will be out and how much it will be? I need the information ASAP, so my mom doesnt order anything i dont want.

It should be out in the next couple weeks I think

Thanks, I should be getting that then. Everything will now be 1/2" fittings.

Which would be better this Ehiem Pump 1250 (http://www.dangerden.com/test/mall/pumps.asp)
or
12v 500gph Pump (http://www.overclockwatercool.com/resepump.html)

I'd go for the Eheim because the AC pumps are quieter and it wouldn't pull any current off your power supply

what if you are getting an extra power supply.

If power isn't an issue than I say consider how much you value noise, and ease of setup. An AC pump would be better if you ever migrate to a Peltier because then you can have a switch that you can manually turn it on with. If you plug the 12V in, then it might take some work to figure out how to start it short of manually powering up a supply.
All I know is that the Eheims are good pumps, and I'm happy with mine.

ok so what is a good (300-500gph) pump that is cheap ($1-$75), besides the Eheim?

I think the Danner Supreme mag drives are good, also. The Eheims are still quieter.

Next Question. Is it a pump/reservoir or just a pump, cause i am looking for the combo.
Voodoo Rufus

Becooling has the Danner and a reservoir combo, but the pump is submerged. This raises the temps a little unless you put the pump right before the radiator. It's kind of hard to fit an Eheim in a reservoir. I have my res attached to my pump.

On the 12v i looked at it has 1/4" of foam padding, do you think this will help reduce the noise?

It'll help reduce the vibration some, but won't shut out the motor noise.

what about this Dtek (http://dtekcustoms.safeshopper.com/7/17.htm?594)

I saw that. It looks nice with those 1/2" connections. It seems decent. The rio 400 is 144gph. It seems a little weak to me. If you really like the dtek, it might be worth it to insulate the casing with foam to not only damp what little vibration a submerged pump has, and would keep the heat inside.

the Marineland 1140 is good, it pumps 300gph. It's a AC pump. but it's not silent, it has a slight noise but nothing serious. you will needd adapters from home depot to use the 1/2 tube (5/8 outlet, 1' inlent. I used 3/8 on mine. I got it for $30 at petsmart
