My employers have apparently LOST THEIR MINDS. That's the only explaination I can come-up with. But I'm passing their insanity onto Intel!
Carte mère Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (Intel P965 Express) - ATX 125,33 €

Mémoire PC Corsair TWIN2X1024-5400C4 - TwinX 2x512 Mo DDR2-SDRAM PC5400 XMS2 91,14 €
91,14 €
Tell me what you think about those components and due note that the prices are before taxes. (I was staring at the dual XMS ram under 100 bucks for a while myself :) )
So the E6300 is actually 199 and the RAM is 109 and the motherboard is like 153 or something.
That just leaves me with having to get a PCI express video card and I'll be STRAIGHT!

Definately going for a budget overclocker system there. Will be curious to see what kind of clocks you can pull off with it. Is that a retail or oem processor, and what will you cool it with?

The E6400 could net you up to ~500 extra mhz on that board rainless.. I'm sure youv'e seen me post that info before ;)
and make sure to get some decent ram.. even if the timings are high you need frequency to overclock on that motherboard.. it doesnt have downward dividers.. like 2:1 or 5:4.. the lowest it has is 1:1 :(

It's the retail processor. And I'll be cooling it with water :) I'm in the process of modding a WC-202... (replacing the pump... drilling holes in the bloc, replacing the tubing...) I should be able to get fairly decent clocks...

Hmm... that seems interesting... What's the default for the 6300? 266x9 or something? The E6400 would be nice... but would probably BLOW my budget. Remember I started off wanting to get an 805... then a 930... and now we're at Conroe-level (100 euros, 150 euros, 200 euros respectively). By the time we get to the E6400 I wouldn't be able to afford a PCIexpress video card anymore. (Remember I'm upgrading from Socket A :) )

Ok. Could you briefly explain the whole ramspeed thing to me. I'm coming off of DDR1 so I don't really understand ANYTHING about DDR2. I think PC4200 gets 533mhz and PC5400 gets 664... (that doesn't sound right... And it's the PC6400 that gets 800 is that right? Bit confused at this point.
And what's the effect of only being able to run at 1:1? What FSB would that have me at at PC5400 vs. PC6400?

E6300 = 7X266

PC2-4200 is DDR2-533
PC2-5400 is DDR2-667
PC2-6400 is DDR2-800
When using the 1:1 ratio take half the DDR2 speed to give you FSB. So, PC2-6400 RAM will do DDR2-800 memory speed at 1:1 with 400 FSB.

Its due out later this year so not to compete directly with the E6600
My guess is that Intel will eventually drop the E6300 and then release a E6500 (2M cache). Then they will drop the E6600 and release a E6800. I'm just speculating though.

Thanks for the heads-up about the RAM. Fortunately I haven't hit the big red button yet, so we're in the clear. I'll go back and see what their PC6400 prices are. I'm paying in three installments with no fees or interest (gotta love socialism...) so a step-up with the RAM might not kill me.
So basically if I can overclock PC6400-800mhz to 1000mhz, then I can hit 500fsb... if I'm understanding correctly.
Well can I run with one 1gb PC6400? Would there be any advantage as opposed to 2 512mb PC6400?

From what I remember USPS is the ****zzzzzzznittle. I remember YELLING at UPS until they finally gave me an OFFICE NUMBER of the person in charge of my particular UPS depot. And I would call him every day. (This was because of an Amazon thing) and finally HE called Amazon and they wound up sending me like three cases of books LOL. But other than that I always had problems with UPS and Fed-Ex. Oddly enough not with USPS. If I wasn't home they'd leave a little slip in my mailbox and I'd just go straight there after work and pick it up. Not once did I have to wait til the next day.
Of course DHL is who you should go with if even the choice. The drivers actually have PHONES and they can be halfway back to the station and you can get them to come BACK with your package :)

Yes I recently have been using USPS more and more. I had the option to use USPS to ship my Allendale but for some reason I chose FEdex, and now I have to wait untill saturday. So far tracking indicates that the package has not left FL, and has just been bounced around from orlando to miami. They best get it on a jet ASAP is it's going to be here saturday.

Umm... Does Fed-Ex actually deliver on Saturday now? They didn't when I left the states... which is another reason I used to go with USPS. If I had lived near the main post office in downtown Chicago I could even pick up my packages on Sunday!
They deliver on Saturday if you use home delivery.

...and to bring us back on topic I'm thinking about ditching the DS3. Too many complaints about the bios and stability issues... Might get a crappy ASRock board so that I can use my current video card (not the one I'm selling) and save a little money there. Then again there are a lot of good deals on the Asus E6600 and E7300. 63 bucks a piece I believe. If I could get that for both my old video cards (5200 and 9600 pro) ... I'd take it

The bios is a little bit wierd. The issue with the psu turnning itself on and off once you do a change in the bios outside of changing the FSB is slightly annoying. XS has a good thread about the DS3, 41 pages about it.
So far mine is "ok". Its definetly overclocking well. The 1 IDE port was a pain though.

Oh ****! LOL I forgot all about the 1 IDE port... That wouldn't do for me AT ALL. I've got 2, 200gb IDE HDs, and 2 ide DVD-R drives and don't really want to fool around with converters and such. Hahahaha! You just saved my life! :bday:

.... ....straight-up. That's a hundred euros (saved over from the DS3) I can put to the side, and STILL run my Allendale Conroe :P while we wait for better motherboards to come out.
The DS3 would have been a nice tide-me-over board too... but not with ONE IDE PORT! I mean I do video work... I just couldn't manage it...

Yeah, the time to upgrade is certainly now... but NONE of the boards are where *I* want them to be yet. I remember upgrading to a Pentium II... I forget which board I got, but it was DEVASTATING! I had the Voodoo II (which they made about two games for before coming out with the Voodoo III) and all sorts of magic under the hood. And, if I recall correctly, I got the mobo loooong before I got the Pentium II chip.
Oh well. I don't want to rush into even 150 euros. My A7N8X-E Deluxe was only ninety euros. And it still beats just about anything the DS3 has onboard (the A7N8X-E has what? THREE IDE ports for up to six IDE drives? Two Satas... I believe even those are Sata2s if I'm not mistaking... firewire, gigabit ethernet AND a seperate 10/100 controller. Not to mention all the things built onto the board that they didn't even give me brackets for.)
Nah... if I got a DS3 now and then had to get even another 150 euro board later... that's 300 euros, or FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS. That's x6800 trust fund money... Whereas is I get a 50 euro board now and a 150 euro board later... no big loss :)

Dude, simple question before you buy, what do you expect from your motherboard?
Not much. Stability maybe. The one IDE port is going to kinda suck... but I'll just have to make do. I was going to get a cheap ASrock motherboard and use the RAM and video card I already have. But I just sold the RAM a couple of minutes ago :) and since there's FINALLY a new Gigabyte bios... there's no point in getting the ASrock. It's the price above all that moves me, and the fact that the dealer I want has it in stock. The 930 is going for the same price as the E6300 over here, so it wouldn't make sense for me to get a cheaper processor unless I got an 805... now why would I do that?
An 805 plus the cheapest possible motherboard would be about 150 bucks. Paying in three installments with no interest or charges with the DS3, the Ram, and an E6300... would be about 150 bucks. 170 with a decent PCI Express card.
So that's where we're at. If I upgraded then from the 805... I would be able to keep ZERO parts. I'd of course be replacing the 805 with the E6300. And The motherboard with a better one. And the last stick of DDR Ram that I'm running this computer on with two sticks of DDR2. Doesn't seem like a good deal to me...

So your primary concern is economy of the whole process? If it is stability you seek, I would WAIT for about a month before I make a purchase.

ight now, if I'm not mistaken ASUS boards have been pretty stable. But the P5W-DH is going to set you back by a LOT. So, I would really wait and see how things pan out in a month or so (if you want to go with gigabyte).

08-04-06, 12:42 PM
Well the RAM is gone... the video card is almost gone... I'm running this machine on my spare video card (which is actually faster than the one I'm selling) and my spare RAM. Crazy world...
The last thing I'm wavering on is the video card. In my pocket right now I have enough to cover the DS3, E6300, and the RAM. But I think I still need to sell a couple of more things before I can afford any decent kind of video card. Matter-of-fact, once I sell ONE MORE THING I'll be able to press the "buy" button.
So come on!

Well economy is sort of the major issue. I'd be ordering an E6600 if money were no object :)
Waiting a month, you'll see if you look back a couple of messages, will not be possible because I've already started selling my parts. I'm on 512mb of backup RAM now. Once the motherboard and CPU go... well by then I better damn-well have my new CPU and motherboard to replace it. Because you see I work on my computer. I only OCCAISIONALLY play Warcraft III on it... or some other RTS game. So my main concern is video editing ( http://www.takeonparis.com )
I update my site (or at least am supposed to) weekly, so I can't afford to be a week, let alone a month, without a computer. I may wait until... tomorrow. While I weigh the pros and cons. Take another stroll through the Rue Mongallet... but the only other chipset available that I would even consider is the AB9. The DH is far... FAR out of my price range. Even the DQ6 is out of range (I would personally use the extra money to get an E6400 if I had said extra money). The DS4 is IN range... but they don't have it where I want to shop... AND SO!
EDIT: Just swapped the PC5400 for PC6400. The difference in Price was negligible. Though I had to drop the video card. Now I'm doing alright but I can't see anything :)

Asus has had great stable and the some of the best if not the best performing motherboards, I don't think Gigabyte has had any issues with stabiltiy in the past just FSB performance (wich with the new 965 options looks like a thing of the past for now)
Rainless if you have a spare PCI GFX.. You could go ahead and order then once you get your system you can part out your entire current rig to sell for a kick ass GFX :)
I still think the E6400 is the golden buy with that board.

My "backup RAM" isn't the most stable thing in the world. So in order to speed-up the process of upgrading, I have a very important question: Can you run DDR2 ram with just one stick of memory? I'm thinking if I just get one PC6400 stick I can get another one later and that will leave me the money I need to get a video card and hit the "place order" button.

DDR2 isn't like RDRAM you dont need pairs for it to operate.
Just make sure you get a single stick that you can easily find a mate to later, you want matching pair's to run in dual channel mode later.
