For those of us in MA, the tax-free weekend (http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/-editorial-tax-free-shopping-/2006/07/28/1750585.htm) is official.
For the weekend of August 12-13, 2006, sales tax will be waived on most items under $2,500.

Is this a yearly event? Let's hope local small business owners make a lot of sales :)

I wouldn't say that. There's a reason it's called "Taxachusetts" The deserve the break. To bad it's only on stuff under $2500, otherwise I could see a lot of car sales and such that weekend
But yeah the variances from state to state are wierd. Here in the NW we've got MT and OR with no tax, ID with no tax on food but 5% on everything else. And then theres stupid WA, with at least 8.6 on everything, but varies (going up of course) from city to city.

Geez, sales tax here in the Bay Area is a killer 8.25%. It adds so much money when shopping at newegg.

I think it is yearly, yes.
The first tax-free day in August 2004 generated $400 million in sales while costing the state about $10 million in lost tax revenues.

Doing it here in GA too. It's off school supplies, clothes, etc. I bought a printer cable and some m&m's today and didn't pay a cent for tax. Here the limitation on clothes is it has to be under $100 per item so I guess I can't buy any shoes or jeans with it:(

That's probably why cars, boats and the like are excluded. IIRC the goal is mainly to spur the state economy during the generally crappy summer sales season.
IMO, not really worth it on total purchases under $25 or so.
