View Full Version : Holy crap!! Core 2 duo all the way!

This is cut & pasted from Anandtechs website.

Sorry if this is a repeat.

Holy crapola!

The goal was to reach the highest possible speed that was benchmark stable. Super Pi, 3DMarks, and several game benchmarks were run to test stability. The 2.93GHz chip reached 4.0GHz on air cooling in these overclocking tests. That represents a 36% overclock on air with what will likely be the least overclockable Core 2 processor - the top line X6800.

To provide some idea of overclocking abilities with other Core 2 Duo processors, we ran quick tests with E6700 (2.67GHz), and E6600 (2.4GHz). The test E6700 reached a stable 3.4GHz at default voltage and topped out at 3.9GHz with the Tuniq Cooler. The 2.4GHz E6600 turned out to be quite an overclocker in our tests. Even though it was hard-locked at a 9 multiplier it reached an amazing 4GHz in the overclocking tests. That represents a 67% overclock.

Enthusuasts have not seen overclocking like this since Socket 478 days, and in fact Core 2 may be even better. The 2.4GHz E6600, which outperformed the FX-62 in most benchmarks at stock speed costs $316, and overclocked to 4Ghz with excellent air cooling. With that kind of performance, value, and overclocking the E6600 will likely become the preferred chip for serious overclockers - particularly those that are looking for champagne performance on a smaller budget.

It is important, however, not to sell the advantages of the X6800 short. AnandTech never recommends the fastest chip you can buy as a good value choice, but X6800 does bring some advantages to the table. It is the only Conroe that is completely unlocked. This allows settings like 266(stock FSB)x15 for 4.0GHz, settings that keep other components in the system at stock speed. This can only be achieved with the X6800 - other Core 2 Duo chips are hard-locked - and for some that feature will justify buying an X6800 at $999. For the rest of us overclockers E6600 is shaping up to be the chip to buy for overclocking.

@Joeteck.. welcome to the world of C2D

yea, the review is kinda old.. but your getting there ROFL.

oh yeah, Conroe's pretty damn impressive all right. Near everone on these forums is raring to get one including myself.

It may look impressive now, but Conroe still has headroom for further scalability. Don't think that the current lineup of procs is where it stops. :D

Agreed. That's why I got an E6300. It's more than enough power for now and I can get a 4MB chip with more headroom later.

Seems the E6600 is the chip to buy for Ocin.... I just setup my wish list on newegg.com. I'm just waiting for the CPU to get there, then I move it to cart.

Looking at the results.. a 965P mobo and a E6400 gets you roughly the same results as buying an E6600.

I would rather have the 2.4Ghz CPU with 4 MB of cache

That net more or less the same overclock?

thats what your paying the extra $$$ for pretty much.

Not if you can manage a 10% better OC on the 2M :sn:

It seems that what the E6400 lacks in straight-up speed against the E6600, the E6400 makes up with better O/C potential. Is that a fair statement?

Oh wait we have been doing this for about 2 years with the AMD

The mobo's we have access to now are still green and need major BIOS updates. I believe that the E6600 will prove to be the winner in the long run.

We need more boards, better BIOS's. That's all.

hmm im thinking ill go with the e6300 myself and upgrade when quad core comes out (soon)

what would a good 2mb combo run compared a 4mb? (cpu+ mb)

Anyone have anything on the intel dp965lt board??? They are dirt cheap, and seeing as the bad axe can oc well, they chould also be able to??

moving the multi UP? only on the FX's....and Intel's EE's have been multi unlocked for about the same amount of time.

No not at all. I would be VERY suprised if an Intel 965 board can even OC more then an Auto 10%.

I have an e6400 retail on a p5b deluxe ... still working on it but so far i am at 430 fsb.
I stopped playing with my basic p5b at 350 fsb - too many v settings absent and max V settings are too low ... esp mem.
Pcmark04 refuses to give me a score above default fsb, but p95 and folding tests are fine.
The bios on this thing is still pretty flakey ... windoze refuses to shutdown requiring a power down/up, but the same thing happens in bios, although it otherwize seems to work ok. I had to flash from the shipped 0204 level to 0405 to get an fsb option >400.

So far, I would say the p5b deluxe is good, the basic p5b sucks for OC.
I have a p5w dh to test as well so i will get a comparison this weekend.

I would go for a Gigabyte 965P mobo and a E6400 (the DS3 with F3 or F4c bios is performing well right now)

But I tend to agree that the E6600 and 965P or 985 chipset will win in the end with further bio's revisions (I don't personaly think the 975X has alot more FSB, 450+ stable, left in it :( )

I would stay away from MSI boards. They return to crap caps recently. Gigabyte is better. imho
