This sounds like a hot deal depending on how awful the motherboards are that come with it. I'm temped to jump on it but I've been out of the scene for so long I don't know how hot this actually is.

s754 has been outdated for a LONG time.
I would only pick one up if you needed a spare box for something. I would also go with the gigabyte motherboard.
Both motherboards i have owned have been gigabytes and i have had NO problems at all with either of them.
Edit: Mabye good deal on CPU and motherboard for setting up a PVR/HTPC?

The Biostar MB is an nforce-3 so it should OC decently. The other two are Via chipset based - not good for OCing. For the money this is a decent combo, although it's pretty cheap too for a basic 939 or AM2 combo these days so it may not make sense to go with the older socket 754 (and be limited to AGP) unless one's budget is really tight.

It's not a bad deal, but the problem is that there will be pretty much NO upgradability. You can get a s939 or AM2 system for not much more, and have much more upgradability.
This is a very interesting combo, very cheap price is unbeatable. However, the onboard video is not attractive, nor is the AGP-only option...Newegg is pretty desperate to rid these boards though probably....

would this be a smart upgrade for me? I have a barton 2500+ and kt400 mobo... this would actually be a decent upgrade although I'm going to get conroe in a few months. any thoughts?

It should tide you over nicely. But why do you want this stop-gap arrangement, when you can spend the money towards your Conroe rig? This combo has 0 resale value.
I must say that that 3400 Clawhammer is a killer chip. Just ask Gautam ;)

I'm in the same boat as you and I really trying to resist buying anything else but a Conroe, and not when they first show up either. Their tempting us. I feel it will get more difficult in the future with cheep CPU's coming shortly. Theirs a reasion their cheep or moving down in price cause when Conroe supplys catch up to demand it will be the chip to have. Hold out.

Hold out.
I agree. I wouldn't jump now unless there was an urgent need to upgrade, such as a part failure.

I bought the Gigabyte combo to replace a bad one on my spare machine so that I wouldn't have to update vid card, ram, etc on a machine that isn't my main. It was a great deal for that. But I wouldn't get it as any kind of upgrade for a primary system considering what else is out there right now.
My A64 3400+ Biostar NF325-A7 Combo arrived today. I ran a quick series of tests with a stock AMD HS/F and voltage +3.1%:

The chip set has a passive cooler and was getting hot so I'm moving the 3400+ to a DFI LanPart UT NF3 GB250 that has active cooling for further testing.
You'll notice it's a Venice with the E3 stepping. I got a early Venice and it was week 16 of 2005 and runs 24/7 at 2.6GHz.
The newEgg combo cpu was:
ADA3400AIK4BO
LBBLE 0524SPMW
Z706182F-----
My Venice 3000+ is:
ADA3000DAA4BP
LBBLE 0516EPAW
Z524788D-----
same DH-E3 revision.

Sweet deal, I may pick up a few of these for some cheap folding.

Great thought for 99 bux.
The BioStar tested faster than my DFI LanParty NF3 boards running Einstein@home by a considerable amount. 7:20 vs 6:50. Same processor, even a few clicks less speed. I swapped a Sempron on a DFI board for the Combo A64 3400+. If the wu's validate I might have to switch cpu's back.
The NF325-A7 is a beast to work with but if it turns out faster just don't stop it.
The A64 3400+'s are definitely FX- material. I had mine up to 2.9GHz on the DFI board on air (ZallMan CNPS 7000 ALCU). Backed down and running at 2.8GHz 1.64v.
How much of a speed increase would this be over my socket a system in my sig?

I did a CMOS reset on the BioStar (happens a lot) and the BioStar and DFI are back to even. I ran NVTuner on the BioStar and that might account for the difference. NVTuner is new to me and comes on the BioStar CD.

Your rig is at the top of the Socket 'A' range.
A socket 754 Sempron clocked at the same speed (most do) will beat that because of the memory controller.
The newegg 3400+ is at least a 512k L2 FX-55 so figure out the difference.
I don't think you're going to like the board for everyday use but you can always pick up a better board and sell the combo board later.

I nabbed two of these w/ the giga(VIA...yeah I know) MBs to set up cheap gaming systems for the kids. Then I went on over to Eagle and got into 2x some combo deal w/ case, 400w PSU, Combo optical, mouse, & KB for 60 bux each and it even had a code for free shipping. :) I very happy. I even tossed an 88 pound refurb monitor on that order and they apparently shipped that for free too. :)

:) nice i think imma order one and build a system for sister but using the cube cases so takes up no room on her dresser :-D as for the cooler im using it right now and my 3700+ @ stock is 2.2 ghz and im running it at 2.8ghz idle 28c load at 36c with this cooler. only using 1.35 vcore on this chip as well. so the cooler i think is awesome and for the price.
when you get that combo let me know how it overclocks :-D as for that processor i think its a bottleneck on your video card this should deff help out

I have one of these combos w/ the giga board running through memory tests just now at 220x12(2640) stock volts. 200 passes of the tough test #5 and not a hiccup yet. :)
