View Full Version : Took the XP plunge, NOW I'M DROWNING!!
Ok, here we go! I decided to go ahead and buy XP, I thought that after all the new OS releases that Microsoft has done that they would have got this one right. So I go out and bought XP. Now when I go to install it I get the same error every time. It doesn't matter if it is a clean install or upgrade from 2000 Pro. It reads as the following.
ERROR: Installation Failed: E:\I386\asms. Error Message: The parameter is incorrect.
FATAL ERROR: One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The paramenter is incorrcet.
So I went to microsoft's web page to find a solution. But, when I pull up info on a similar problem it says to contact Microsoft, and depending on the problem found that they might charge you and they might not. Well by god, I'm not paying to have a program I just bought be fixed, much rather just take it back if OC.com can't help me out. Thanks in advance.

Actually I had problems w/ installing XPro on my parents comp. i had to use one 4X IDE, a 24X ide burner, and a 24X scsi burner=) Some of the setup files wasn't being read by the old CD drive so I put it in the scsi. The scsi did fine up until the 2nd installation screen but it wouldn't do anything other than spin up and spin down. I had to put it back into the old 4X and it worked. Meanwhile the ide burner kept getting buffer overrun or some sort. It didn't work right till I had the OS in.
Wierd.
Just saying I had the same message you did..try another CD-rom drive.
thanks, I'll give that a try. I have already tried my 10x DVD and Plextor 12x burner with no success though. I will see if I can find an old cd-rom and try that. Any other options guys?

Come on guys, if we can't find the solution, who can?
Clean the cd see if there's a good clean surface..
Usually my CDs would run a lil wack when there's all this dust or dirt on it.
I had to use a different cd rom once and then later it was fine so I don't really know but try a couple of drives and call M$ and notify them of the problem.

i have the solutions for YOU
use this CD to install in another FUNCTION system.............if it runs successfully, there is something wrong with your CD..rom or CD BURNER........Contact your hardware manufacture for REPLACEMENT.
if it doesn't run in another system, call MS and tell them to send you another CD..............they will do that for FREE..........just tell them that the setup CD is damage................
BINGO !
You could try copying the whole disk onto your Harddrive. Then get to a Dos Prompt and run the install from there. I've always had better luck installing directly from the harddrive vs installing from the disk's. Setup actually runs faster as well for me.
If you do do this. You'll want to throw in your Win 98 bootup floppy disk and run "Smartdrv.exe first before you start the install. otherwise the install will hang or take forever. If you have any other questions just ask.
