I really want to get into this folding thing when I get my new rig, and from what I understand it needs to run 24/7. Would I still be able to game and such while the application is running, or do I need to get a PC dedicated to folding?
I don't know where you heard that it needs to be running 24/7 but no that isn't true. You basically install it (you want the text version) and you set it up to run as a service in the background (we can help you do that here) and it won't interfere with your games. Basically after you get it set up properly it just runs in the background and you don't have to worry about it after that. It isn't necissary to run 24/7, some people do but you don't have to.

First of all, you dont have to run FAH 24/7. It is a service that can be started and stopped anytime you want too. Also, it runs at a low priority, so it will only use unused cpu cycles. If any other program, i.e. a game needs cycles, Fah will surrender them. FAH will not release ram though, but there are very few wu's out right now that need a lot of ram. You can always try to run the game, or whatever program you need to use, and if you feel that FAH slows it down, just stop the service and restart when you are done. Welcome to the team if you decide to try it.:)
We hope to see you folding with us soon :)

running 24/7 is what we all strive for, because it gives the most back to the program, but its not necessary

Let us know if you have any other questions or need help getting setup when you get started... I (we) thrive on assimilating new folders. :D
:welcome: to T32. Enjoy your stay. FYI... new guy brings the

I f I may I would like to ask a possible "stupid" question. I see other folders speaking of their daily progress "WU?'s?" How does one go about checking what there pc has done thus far? This is only my second day folding,(NOOB) he he.

The only thing you really need to do is set up
User: silent_bob
Team: 32
and then you should be GOLDEN!! just watch those WU's rack up
oh to check your stats go to http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_list.php?s=&t=32&p=1
and you have to wait for 2 WU's to register to see any results

What username did you choose turkey? ...and don't listen to bob there. He's got the right team but is also trying to recruit for his sub-"team". :D Shame on you bob. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/harlam357/slap.gif
However you can follow the link he gave to check your stats. Just type in your username in the search box on the left.

Turkey4550:bang head :bang head :bang head :bang head ah ha, I did the 1click install and did not edit my username before I started the program so it has been running for nearly 48hours under WEDO's name, lol. Oh, well, I have it right on both rigs now,I hope, hehe. Thanks for the help guys.

I have a question. I have 4 folders running at home and 1 at work. All of them have completed at least 1 WU. Why is it that only 2cpu's are showing up at F@H stats page for the last 7, and last 50 days. It did show 4 last week at 1 point, now down to 2. I have 5 PC'S FOLDING!!!!!!!Any one, any one???? I am lost. ....

I have a noob question as well. does the extra SSE boost work on all work units, or only on a select few. Because I have sse and sse2, but the optimization is not shown in the client.

The cpu count at stanford is based on the number of folding instances that turn in a wu in the last seven days.
So if your some of your instances take longer than 7 days to complete a wu, that would explain things.
Are you running a single instance on each machine? If you run more than 1 on a machine and don't have them set up right, they will look like the same machine to stanford ... if this is the case then both instances on the rig will be getting assigned the same wu and only 1 would get credit.
If you only have 1 instance on each rig, and they are setup properly then the duplicate wu problem will not happen. You can check the fahlog.txt on each machine, and make sure they each have a unique id in the log. If you do have more than 1 instance on a machine, then each needs to have it own unique machineid in the client.cfg ... usually 1 and 2 (can be 1-8).
If you used wedo's 1 click for dually then 2 instances on the rig would be set up properly. If you ran the wedo 1 click twice on 1 rig to set up 2 instances, then your setup will be wrong and you wil need to fix it.

I don't think any of the current wu's benefit from sse2.
DGromacs get about an 80% bonus on rigs with SSE2 since stanford benchmarks their points without sse2 enabled.. You will notice the nice ppd boost if you get any of them on the right rigs :)

good to know, but can all work units use SSE instructions? Because I am working on one, with optimization set to auto, and I am not getting that "extra sse boost" thing in the client log.

I don't believe they all do ... it depends on the project and the core being used.
You don't normally have to set anything ... it will be used automatically except after an improper shutdown.
I use the -forceasm flag on all my instances to ensure that all appropriate optimizations are used when you restart a wu after an improper shutdown due to a windoze freeze, power loss, etc.

Ok, thanks. I guess I will just use the -forceasm flag from now on.
