I have been testing/folding with the same E6400, same crucial mem for a little over a week now. All tests with exact same components except for mobo.

Don't be fooled by the p5b-d ONLY getting to 435 folding stable vs 444 on the DS3 ... the p5b-D get gets 11.5% more folding work done at 2% lower fsb. Possibly due to the slightly better memory timings the p5b-d runs 4-4-3-8 vs 4-4-4-9 on the same mem at max vd on both mobos.

DS5 gets a little better pcmark05 score at 6111 on my setup vs 5855 on the p5B-d.

Superpi 1M times are also better on the p5b 16.109 vs 16.453 on the ds3.

435FSB folding stable, nice! Get a nice NB sink / MCH mods on that puppy and you'll definitely see 450 :). Congrats.

Have your tried the newest bios with the DS3 (F4e). From What I have heard, the new bios fixes many of the memory issures this board seems to have.

not yet ... the ds3 is sitting idle atm ... i have run out of memory to keep it running with the other folding rigs ... but some more is on the way ... and hopefully some 6600's too?

I think with the rate bios's are showing up for these conroe mobos i almost need to do a weekly retest ... but i doubt that i will ... i don't like to stop them folding except for a very good reason :D

The 6400 is nice, but it just barely beats my best 930's at folding atm ... of course at about /edit 50% /endedit less power consumption and heat production. :D

I am hoping that some 6600's with 4 mb cache and higher clocks will put a 25% production hurt on the 930's ... the 930's are folding at 4.2 with mem running much higher speeds/tighter latencies than the conroe mobos can currently do.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad since just upgraded to p5b dlx wifi, and all this time my gut feeling leads me to this mobo and seems its worth. :D

Which bios that mobo was running when you got that score ? 0507 ?

My mobo shipped with 0204.

I have only flashed it to 0405 so far which was needed to get an fsb option > 400.

I have almost all the features disabled ... i disabled the jmicron after i loaded windows etc from cd. The lan and audio are really the only features i have enabled atm.

Am running single sata, so no testing of all the nice features ... just bare bones for OC and 724 folding.

I hope it works out well for you too :)

Thanks, but I got some problem with CPU temp and it seems like the one I got has a wild cpu sensor and I think its out of calibration. My thread HERE (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=472873)

Do you experience any similiar sympton say the E6400 temp was way above "common/normal" temperature level using Asus Probe ? Also the VCore reported by CPUZ is way too high !!

nice test Pete!!! TKS!!!

but one (especially for folding purpose) needs to also figure in the price difference between the two board tho!! and do you think the DS3 will still have room to improve with better BIOS?!

Yeah, the p5b-d costs $70 cdn more than the ds3.
But i was so suprised by the big delta in folding perf that I thought i would share it with folks. Not sure how representative folding is vs other data heavy workloads, but i thought i would offer some insight beyond simply 'the ds3 runs a higher fsb' since not only was folding much faster at a lower fsb, but superpi was also faster.

I see there is a new bios already for both mobo's, so it will be interesting to retest them both. I would not be suprised if fsb doesn't go up but performance #'s improve due to memory ... but only testing will tell.

Sadly, but not suprising i guess, there is no new bios yet for the p5b basic which would be a better comparison price wise with the ds3. Certainly comparing the basic p5b to the ds3, the ds3 would win atm, at least based on my tests to date. But i know how a good bios update can change things like it did with my budget pressler folders ... the p5ld2 finally got a good bios that lets presslers oc as well on it as they do on the p5wd2's.

ASUS seems really slow at getting good bios for their entry level mobos ... probably since they want their more expensive mobo's to do better than entry level. The only problem with this approach, is that they will lose sales to companies like gigabyte on the entry level mobos. But these are just a few observations from my pretty limited sample of mobos.

be sure to keep me info on your further DS3, P5B-D test as I'm planning to use both boards! DS3 for pure folding, P5B-D for real rig (including upgrade for my HTPC rig).

p.s. when you are installing the audio driver on the P5B-D, does it included some sort of Dolby Digital Live software??

Give it a while LS.. the plain Jain P5B is due for some bios upgrades.. it might be a DS3 bang/buck contender with downward dividers.

I only installed the base sound drivers ... and never even had a speaker on it to try it out :o.

I include sound in all my folding rigs even tho i never listen to it. ... an old habit ... right after getting windows loaded, i load chipset then audio and video so there is nothing to trip over during other tests ... so many windows things seem to depend on them i guess ... but really just an old habit on builds.
