I have a 857 series Cisco DSL router I just got a couple of weeks ago.. Everything is setup and working fine except... it seems to want to timeout when not in use.
Does anyone know the IOS command or parameter I am looking for to stop the ATM or Dialer interface from timing out and needing to recoonect after no usage for a while? I just want it to be always on.
Thanks for the help.

Okay I think i am on to something.. can anyone tell me the difference between these 2 comamnds?
dialer idle-timeout 0
dialer persistent
thanks.
dialer idle-timeout defines the number of seconds the interface it is applied to will be kept open if there is no interesting traffic.
dialer persistent keeps the connection open, even if there is no interesting traffic.

No luck tried both of those commands together, individually and separately. No luck ..
IOS 12.3, anyone have any ideas on how to keep my connection from timing out and needing to renegotiate my login after a while of not using the PC?
Well I am not really familiar with that model. Anyway the dialer command is really for ISDN services, not DSL, so I don't know where you got the idea it would help. Might be that Cisco applied it to DSL? I kind of doubt it though.
The idea would be to apply the dialer persistent to the DSL interface.
Most likely it is your ISP timing you out after x minutes of inactivity.

From what i am reading teh dialer persistent command should be what I need in this situation, but it does not seem to be doing the trick.
It is not my ISP.... as of a couple of weeks ago I had a Cheapie netgear router hooked to this same line and I had it set to never dissconect, and it never did. Also, even if the ISp was to drop the connection .. my understanding of the persitent command if that even in the event of a dissconection, or a line failure or anything that causes a drop .. it should attempt to reconect imediatly until it makes a connection.
I'm at a loss, this is odd, it really looks like I am using the correct command, but it does not seem to be working as described. I assume if this command was not in the feature set of my IOS version it would error out when trying to use the dialer persistent command .. it takes the command and shows it in the running config.

How long is the time between the timeouts? Could you get the modem to do something (connect to an ntp server(?)) a bit more frequently and see if it helps?

To tell you the truth, I am not real sure how often it times out. I just go about my normal routine .. watch a ballgame, eat lunch or whatever and I come back and it takes a few seconds to reestablish the connections. This waiting a few seconds is not that big of a deal, annoying however … but one thing I wanted to do was setup a VPN from my girlfriends house in the near future.. this will cause problems if I try to establish a connection to a line that is not connected .. If you know what I mean.
The idea of a looking for a timeserver periodically is not a bad idea at all, if I can’t come up with the right solution that might just be a fix. Thanks for the idea.
