I've got an old 80gb 7200 rpm Hitachi Deskstar I used a while back which has some of the pins that connect to the IDE cable broken. As far as I'm aware, that's the only problem. Is it possible to pop it open and somehow physically pop it open and move the insides to another HD that has a working IDE pin interface? Sort of like moving parts from one computer case to another. This isn't necessary really, as I don't really /need/ the files on it, but 1. it'd be nice to have some of them and 2. it might be fun to do it. So is this possible?

i dont think you can because the stuff inside might not be compatible with another hard drive

You can do it. It would be easier to replace the pins or the board but you could do it. Just set up a home clean room first.

As I found out doing this, you will need the same drive. Maybe one of the same size could work as well. If you have another drive with the same circuit board you can change the board over with the ide connector on it.

Oh, I didn't know I could just replace the pins. How would I go about doing that?

And I don't have any spare hard drives with the same specs so I guess the transplant is dead before it started.
