From my understanding, he added a resistor to increase the output from the voltage regulator, boosting the transmit power.
I'd like the schematic of the transmitter power supply circuit so I can understand how the mod works and how to apply it to other wireless devices.

Now, there are a lot of softmods that do the same, but how do they work? If the circuits can handle the higher power, they surely would run like that from the factory, right? (I think the reason why is because the manufacturers do it on purpose to allow their high end units to sell. And yet, the only difference from a lower end unit might just be a tiny piece of sheet metal for a heatsink and some tweaked settings.)

Using a higher voltage for more tx power can degrade signal quality. I have seen this on some of the linksys AP mods. Im not saying this mod won't work, just be aware of the possible side effects. The sheet metal inside is a RF shield not a heatsink.

If you really want a better radio look at mods that increase receiver sensitivity.

I think it would be best to use a tiny variable resistor. Then adjust it to get the best overall signal.

only problem is having a proper spectrum analyzer and other test equipment to see how distorted the output is, for your tweeking. its an interesting hack, if i had the meters and stuff to properly test it i'd play with the concept, see if i can make it work for orinoco classic cards.

Cool mod
Use quality anttenas... yagi to yagi or yagi to omni.

Couldn't a network card that reports both signal level and noise level be used as an analyser? Or maybe some kind of homemade RF downconverter connected to a TV card?
