Ok its not an emergency but Ive been considering a 2.8c 3.2 or 3.4EE

I’ve been considering these stepping since prices have went down a bit, I cant make up my mind or figure out what chip I should go too next I have a very nice 2.4c@3.0Ghz rock solid with 5652 mb/s bandwidth according to Sandra, the quandary is do I get a 2.8c & hope for a better oc or just go for the 3.2 SL7PN EO and shoot for 4.0ghz or if you have some better advice I’m all ears, I need some input, I want to spend my limited funds wisely thanks in advance.

2.8C SL6Z5

3.2 SL7PN EO

3.2E DO SL7E5

3.2E CO SL7B8 run hot

3.2E DO SL7KC maybe not so good:attn:

I had the SL7PN, I got it up to 4ghz (3.8 with no voltage increase!) but it fried my mobo. I decided to ditch it as the heat it generated was silly.

Now I have a 3.2ee @ 3.45 and it's quicker than the prescott was at 3.8 at gaming, aquamark etc. It also runs only just above ambient air temp due to the exessive cooling I put in the case for the prescott. This makes overclocking other components easier.

You have an Abit IC7, so a Prescott will run fine. I'd be tempted to try that 3.2 E0 stepping. Put a good heatsink on that bad boy and you should be close to 4 gig.

I had a 3.2 SL7PN EO. I don't recommend going past 3.7 on air. If you are on water with a big enough radiator 4.0 should be achievable with enough voltage.

For s478 a Dothan blow's any P4 out of the water, but you're stuck with the Abit from what I'm gathering.

I had an IC7-g and an XP-90, it still killed my mobo so be careful

3.5 would make me happy :) 3.7 would rock Im not upgradeing anytime soon maybe another year, or so.

how much are these chips you are considering?

if they are anywhere near $200 (or even much over $150) i would consider waiting for the e4300 and asrock ConRoe865PE (http://www.asrock.com/product/ConRoe865PE.htm). that way you will have an upgrade you can feel.

going from a northwood @3ghz to a pressie at 3.5-3.8ghz, you won't notice a huge improvement.

Im shooting for the 60$ range :) used, I figure 60ish for a 500to800mhz upgrade is not that bad If I can land a 3.4ee for 75ish with the 2mb cahe id grab it. Im not going to spend over 80 bucs now that I think of it. This computer screams right now, I know theres faster but for what I do its nice, Id love to build a new rig but I dont see it happnin for a while.

bEATbOX, after checking out that MOBO maybe saveing money is feasable for a good upgrade, I could even use most of my current components and upgrade them as needed

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

u got me thinking now, do you own this bord ? just how good is it?

hmmm how about a Asus P5P800

For what its worth, my 2.8 prescott does 3.6 on air. All i can say is just dont spend too much, as the p4 is really getting outdated fast.

hmmm how about a Asus P5P800

P5P800-SE or VM would be good paired with an 805 or maybe 915, but wont support conroe. Also, the VM has very little o/c options.

sorry, i do not own that board. i don't think anyone does ATM.

it should be out before winter, its the only board i know of that will run Conroe, DDR1 and AGP, while using an Intel chipset.

you could get the mobo and a cheap used lga chip, like a 630, then come january, when the e4300 comes out you can drop it right in. the e4300 will be a Allendale, 9*200=1.8ghz with 2mb cache. should have a good shot at 9*400=3.6ghz (although, admittedly, we have no idea how high the fsb on that ConRoe865PE will go. might be limited to 333 or something, still 3ghz tho).

i just think that if you spend a bit on a mobo now, you will open up a lot more upgrade possibilities in the next 6-12 months. :)

edit...just wanted to add, the e4300 will be around ~$130. here's a front page article on this cpu: http://overclockers.com/tips00999/

Beatbox will this processor Intel 550J LGA775 P4 3.4Ghz drop into this mobo Asus P5P800 or P5P800SE and do ya think it would be a decent upgrade ?

This one looks even better if it will go into an p5p800se

Any 5XX or 6XX processor should work in the P5P800 or P5P800 SE. The Pentium D (dual core), like the 805 you linked to, will work in the P5P800 SE, but not the standard P5P800.

Hey BB thanks, as with the s478 IC7G with the 2.4c was a killer setup...

can you recomend anything simular in the 775 area like the best 775mobo & chip combo for the price, Im not too sure about all this duel core stuff I use my computer for Gameing/Multimedia/Work so it has to be good at Gameing LOL that board beatbox put up looks intrigueing but I dont like the 333 concept. altho its looks like a great board besides that.

any board that will come close to 400fsb will require you to get a new video card, new ram, most likely a new psu.

sorry, you are kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. kinda like me :)

my current rig is a 2.4c at 3.4ghz, ic7maxIII with a x800pro and a gig of ram. i'm selling my stuff to a coworker, and taking the plunge on a new e6400 setup at the end of the month, or a week into sept.

I think I found one that will fit the bill
ASUS P5P800SE ?

Also the Abit AS8....

I just want to get into the 775 cpus I dont need the latest & greatest, I may be wrong but from what Ive read just going to 775 v 478 is a good upgrade but I want to stay at 800fsb if duelcore processors wont run at 800fsb then Ill go with a single on HT or is that a mistake rember Im working with 200 $ or less here hopefully LESS :)

the p5p800se is great in that it will run ddr1, agp, and it will run any 8xx or 9xx dual cores.

it does not however run Core2Duo.

that may or may not be of concern to you. :)

*edit* just saw your edit.

i think, you are getting confused on FSB speeds. for a 800mhz fsb, you set 200 in bios, as the intel fsb is quad pumped.

when i said that the other mobo might be limited to 333fsb, i meant 333 set in bios, or 4*333 = 1332 "real" mhz.

that ConRoe864PE i posted will for SURE run a 805 at 200fsb set in bios, or 4ghz. of course, depending on your cooling/psu.

damit beatbox your just going to force me to buy a conroe arent ya:eek: ;)

If I cant pull down some stuff real cheap I just might go with ConRoe865PE

nothing wrong with going for an el-cheapo powerhouse rig. a 9xx at 4.5ghz is still a monster of a cpu.

i would keep a close eye on the classifieds, as more people grab c2d, they will most likely be flogging last years gear at low prices.
