I'm getting tired of having to use my crappy Ipod stock earphones. Now that school is starting soon, I decided that it would be a good time to buy some new ones, as I will have to ride the subway 60 minutes a day now and I do a lot of flying. I've been doing a little research and Shure seems to be a great company to buy from.

My price range is right around 100 dollars, so I figured I would by the E2c earphones, but after checking amazon, I ran into a dilemma, the E2c has been knocked down to ~$70 and the E3c is only ~$125. With the E3c now closer to my price range, I'm considering getting it.

I'm assuming that the E3c is a better earphone, but what I want to know is: Are the improvements from the E2c to the E3c enough to warrant spending an extra $55?

I personally don't like the E2c or the E3c. E4c are nice but thats alot more money. Get a pair of these and you'l be amazed.

I like the E3c and the E2c b/c they act as earplugs too. Do those sennheisers also have that feature?

yes the sennheisers do act as ear plugs although they do not block out as much noise as the shures do. Sounds to me like what you really want is a pair of Etymotic ER-6i. Those things sound absolutly amazing and block out more noise then pretty much anything on the market except for their pricy big brothers the Etymotic ER-4's. I've owned or own a pair of everything that has been listed so far. I use the sennheisers the most because they sound great and are quick and easy to pull in and out of the ear, also they are tiny so I can use them while laying down on my side without pushing on my ear cannals. The ER-6's sound better than all the others and do an outstanding job of blocking out noise with their -20db of isolation.

best phones for $50: Sennheiser CX300S

best phones for $100: Etymotic ER-6i (Ultimate Ears super.fi 3 studio black are also outstanding for this price range.

if you still want better: take a look at shure E4 Pro, or Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 pro

Hyperasus, one review of the sennheisers says that the cord is fairly short. how long is it?

BenF, I'm in pretty much the same boat as you in looking at new headphones for my ipod, but with a slightly lower budget.

I got 70 bucks as the lowest for the Ultimate Ears super.fi 3 http://www.datavis.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/proddisp.d2w/report?prrfnbr=457046&site=PRGB

85+ ish for the Etymotic. and $70 for the Shure E2c.

I was going between my hd497's and some other ear buds to see if I could hear the difference, but I dunno, I'll have to try again in a quieter environment.

I have a pair shure e2c's, i used them for a flight today. They are great once you get used to them. The isolation is great when you want to concentrate on the music. imo they are a little un-comfortable unless you use the foam ear pieces. however i would also recomend the senn cx300 or the etys. if i were you i would find a way to try out each and pick your favorite.
