Not a bad idea LuKE. For now, it would be easy to setup a temp room - but if we wanted a registered room on the undernet, or dalnet services, it can get a little hairy. Someone would have to maintain the bot - and registration is a little difficult. If we had the membership and good traffic in the room, we could give it a shot.
everything you proposed can be taken care of easily. If you guys are interested just contact me on efnet under the nick luke911.
why not run our own server? irc.ocsetiteam.com?
I have not played in the IRC waters in a long time but I know there are quite a few security issues to watch out for on a public server. I'd vote for something we run if I had a choice. :)

Sounds like a good idea, at least set up a test site and see how it goes.

Would it be possible to get one of those free java-based chat rooms on the ocsetiteam.com site?
That would be the obvious solution..........:)
I would not recommend a web based chat. the features are limited. We could run our own server but it would take more then one person to maintain the server(s) we need. I would still stick with setting up a channel on a established network for obvious reasons. They know how to run it, eastablished networks like efnet, undernet and newnet are not as bad as people think they are. how's that saying go, one bad apple ruins the whole basket?
My point is that we COULD run our own server, but we would need the people to operate and keep everything running smoothly. and this usually only comes with experince. btw, just my 2 cents.

great idea
be glad to join in any oc team irc channel
*irc addict here*
:)
I would still vote for setting up our own server, should not be that difficult and the traffic would not be that high for just one chanel. We would have complete control and security would be the best possible. Also, either way we go, I would suggest trying to get a bot going to host the room. If I ever remember what the bloody password (damn I'm good! ;) ) is for my netgear I might even be able to help the team with some of this schtuff.

well here's an idea
how bout we try a small network that's been around for three years. Stable services, stable network and understanding ircops(i'm one of them). that way you have both a secure network and ircops that are interested in both overclocking and seti@home.
I had been trying to get a java chat server running as a test, but I seem to have a firewall problem either at my ISP, or here at my network. The chat worked here, but not through the internet-as a few people I pm'd can attest!
I would be willing to set up a chat server here as either a test or permanent if it goes well- does anyone know of good chat server software that is freeware or has a full demo?
If someone knows of a free chat host to test/ use that would be fine in my book too.
windows or linux.
web or irc chat
I would say irc would be easier to administer because it's more upfront. web based chat are slow for even me and i'm on 6mb dsl. If your serious about running a chat server the best way to talk about is to either find me on messenger at luke9111@hotmail.com

I would definately be interested in an IRC chat room. I haven't used IRC in a couple of years, but I'm sure it hasn't changed tooo much;)
I am finally getting my old k62 up again- I was going to put nt 4.0 on it, but decided to go with linux since the likelihood of finding a freeware chat server is much greater!
The trick will be that I am not a linux guru, so it may take some time to get everything all set up. (including the linux SETI client!)
i've done all that, find me and i can tell you how i did everything that your wanting to do. every irc server for linux is free. there are a few windows irc servers but they aren't very secure. If neone would like to come and join a temp irc channel until we have our own setup download mIRC from www.mirc.com.
When you have it downloaded open mirc32.exe. in the status screen type /server irc.bunker7.net . after it connects type /list to get a list of all the channels. #ocsetiteam is there. just double click to join the channel.
IRC chat room is up (Thanks to LuKe!)
Follow the directions up above!
Actually guys after seeing the interest in it I have taken the liberty of setting up a registered room on Dalnet. #OCSetiTeam.com just working out the kink's of OP's and what not, if you would like to hang out there feel free. Again that is on Dalnet, the room name is OCSetiTeam.com just type /join OCSetiTeam.com and voila there you are.

well i've already got the room and a bot serving the zip file for using seti. I'm a ircop( a plus we don't have on other networks) and it's smaller so it doesn't suffer from netsplits. My choice also hides your hostmask so your it's hidden. so instead of saying something like as1-dial69.flnt.mi.voyager.net it would display bunker7-60878.flnt.mi.voyager.net.

Ihad no problems joining the room in the first post about irc seti room, but I can't get in this one. Says it doesn't exist. I joined a random dalnet server, and then just pasted your /join OCSetiTeam.com in there, any ideas?
i'm not trying to step on neones' toes here. But the way i see it if your gonna start a channel for a group of people you've gotta support it. I've setup a bot that has the zip file with the clc, setispy and setidriver. I've also got an addon for mirc so we can show off our rigs specs. the bot is there 24/7 hosted on my dsl. I'm usually there most of the day. just ask TC when he came in at 11:30 last night, heh. well to whomever has the channel good luck.

What he meant to say was type this:
/join #OCSetiTeam.com
:)
I can't even get on to Dalnet - keeps kicking me off saying that too much abuse has come from my host (@Home) and I would have to email somebody to get some kind of software from them in order to access anything on dalnet.
smaller network always better
