really you need a 24 pin psu. alot of mobo's will work with a 20 pin (my sisters emachines came this way) but it's really not adviseable, they put the extra 4 there for a reason. also the adapters just put extra stress on the psu as they are borowing power from the other lines

if you are going to use power hungery hardware like CPU, memory & GPU then yeah you'll need a 24 pin connector or if you are going to OC. Manufacturers & sites I've read about the connectors say long as you are not OC'ing and/or using something that will require the heavier loads will be fine.

But as jaymz9350 said I really would really get a psu that has one. My last mother board has a 24 pin connector on the mother board & came with a cap for the end 4 incase you didn't have a 24 pin psu connector.
