Hi everyone, this is my first post so please excuse any ignorance.
Just built a system with the Pentium D 805 and have it going at 3.7 with upgraded fan. This new conroe chip is driving me nuts though. Can someone give me a real world difference between the two using a fan cooled overclocked E6600 say encoding a dvd to divx format.
Unfortunately, I have to purchase a new motherboard to due this...my asus board doesn't support conroe. I have even thought about overclocking the x6800.
And than you guys throw the Kentsfield into the mix with 4 cores....will any programs take advantage of this?
So money being an abstract thought...would you stay with the 3.7 Pent D 805, Jump to the Conroe or wait for the Kentsfield.

There is a big difference, The Pentium D uses net burst stuffs.. and the conroe is a totally new thing. It will out perform all net burst things.
The Conroe blows away my PentD 950, so it double blows away the 805 because the 950 blows away the 805 :) Simplistic but thats about the bottom line :)

And do it at MUCH MUCH cooler temps:beer:
You will need to decide for yourself. Yes, the Conroe is a better performing processor, but what does your budget look like? Does your system handle all your current software ok? You still have a decent system, you might consider holding off a while, like maybe until this fall, when Conroe prices drop and there are more Conroe supported motherboards available.

i think we are pretty much in the same path, i just upgraded to 940 two months ago...and now conroe is here which i totally understand that it will blow my 940 off. however, in reality, i don't really need something that is super fast at this moment, 940 is just enough for what i am doin' now. and i will be satistified. and right now, i can have my 940...and wait till the new tech more mature, then i will upgrade to kentsfield later.
